William Dale Talbert

Dale was born on July 13th 1949 in Concord, NC to the late Reginald William and Mildred Mae Talbert. He was the first born of their five children. As the eldest son from a family with a powerful work ethic, Dale was able to accomplish many things throughout his life.

A 1969 graduate of Mooresville High School, Dale attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he joined the Air Force ROTC program and also contributed to the Daily Tar Heel as a photographer. In 1971, he received his B.A. in English. He continued his education at the North Carolina School of Law, earning his J.D. in 1974.

Following graduation, Dale completed his active duty obligations to the Air Force by serving in the Judge Advocate General Corps at Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville from 1974 - 78. He continued on with the Air Force Reserves as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate at Pope AFB until 2000. He served in the same capacity for USAF Central Command at Shaw AFB until 2003. Dale returned to Pope for a couple years before retiring in 2005 as a Lt Col.

In 1978, Dale began a two year stint in the Cumberland County DA's office. In 1980, his career path led him to Raleigh and the Attorney General's Office, where he spent over thirty years serving the state of North Carolina. He began his work in the Crime Control & Motor Vehicles division, later moving to the Corrections section and finally to Special Litigation, where he retired in 2009.

Not one to be content retired, Dale has spent the last several years working in Sanford at the Lee County Attorney's Office, first as Deputy County Attorney and was named County Attorney this past year.

Mr. Talbert was preceded in death by his father, Reggie Talbert, his mother, Mildred, his brother Dave, and granddaughter Ansley.

He is survived by his wife, Julia Lohman, his "former spouse", Kathy Talbert, his son, Justin Talbert, daughters Lindsay Addison and Danielle Lohman, his brother, Regan Talbert, his sisters, Regina Byers, Sarah Halstead, and Michelle Westmoreland, also by his three grandsons, Evan, Gavin, and Bryce Addison and two granddaughters, Lauren and Ella Talbert.

A Celebration of Dale's Life will be held Saturday, July 21st at 2pm in the Upper Club of the Loudermilk Center for Excellence at Kenan Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
