He is survived by his loving wife, Tillie Tingen, stepsons; Doug (Whitney) and Mark Johns, sister Louise Harrell; and grandsons James and Jasper Johns. Robert enjoyed also his many conversations with Beverly, C.M., Ellis, and Van over the years, who all survive him, and loved them all. He was preceded in death by his father Bob Tingen, and mother Sadie Tingen; and his brother Irvin Tingen.
Robert ran a successful dry cleaning business in Raleigh for several years before retiring. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a proud member of the N.C. Coast Guard Auxiliary, being most active recently at Kerr Lake. He was proud of his brothers and sisters in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, especially Gene Midyette, and enjoyed his time serving with all of them. Robert also was devoted to his beloved dogs; Boy, Little Girl and Jed who all preceded him in death, and enjoyed the recent months with his their new dog Suzie, who survives him.
Robert was a kind and giving husband, father, grandfather and friend for many years. He loved to tell a story and talk with others, and was especially good at fixing things with his hands. He trusted all he met, and was always willing to give anything he had to help them. He will be greatly missed, but he is at peace now.
