Peter George Scott

Peter George Scott passed away on 14 November 2022. The son of Chester and Rosemary Scott, Peter was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on 21 June 1960. He was husband to Michelle (Bruneau), whom he married at the Scott family’s mountain home in Ripton, Vermont, on 10 June 2000. He was brother to Paula, Mariellen, Peggy, Chester, Chris, John, and Jeanne; uncle to 11 nephews and nieces; step-father to Elisabeth (married to Inder); “Papa” to Ajay, Sara, and Isabelle; dog dad to his beloved Shi-tzu, Abby; and friend to many.

Peter spent his formative years in Oneida, New York. He then graduated from Dunwoody HS in Georgia and earned a BS from Georgia State and an MS (magna cum laude) from SUNY Albany’s School of Social work (1997).

Throughout his life, Peter showed the world over and over again the traits that formed the core of who he was: his fighting spirit, his deep love and appreciation for his family and friends, his intelligence, and his unique sense of humor.

Peter, a die-hard Cleveland Browns and Indians fan, was himself a natural athlete—excelling on any field, court, or green he found his way to. He shared that love with his family—truly enjoying family softball games and holiday trips to the bowling alley. And woe to the person who was not faster to a gallon of ice cream than Peter.

Peter truly valued each friend he made along his journey, staying in touch with as many as he could and using the gift of technology to reconnect with friendships that dated as far back as grade school.

Peter’s immense love for his very large family was constant and underpinned so much of his effort in his life. He loved nothing more than to spend time with his siblings at family gatherings, laugh with his whole extended clan at family reunions, or sit quietly on a mountain porch with just a few of them. He dreamed of the day when he would move back to Ohio so he could live closer to many family members, especially several of his siblings. Peter honored his mother’s deeply held belief in service by his choice of profession, touching the lives of so many he worked with.

It was the small, precious Shi-tzu named Abby who brought to the surface Peter’s deep compassion for animals, particularly dogs. Peter was at first hesitant to commit to her, but she immediately grabbed his heart and never let go. They lived the past 17.5 years together, and Peter never missed an opportunity to tell stories about her. He spared no effort in caring for her.

Peter’s final moments in this world were acted out of unwavering love. And we know that Peter is swaying on a hammock in heaven with Abby—who followed him just days later—on his lap. Godspeed to Peter Scott, who showed us that this life and the love we share are forever worth fighting for.
