Max was born in Buncombe County, NC on March 18, 1930 to William A. and Minnie Rhodes. He graduated from Valley Spring High in 1949. Who knew Max would later be their head coach? In going to Morehead, Max replaced his brother, Ray Rhodes, who resigned.
Coach Rhodes became the head soccer coach at NCSU from 1964-1979, where he was the first winning coach with the best overall record. He retired from NCSU in 1995. Max was a long time member of the NCSU Faculty Club, where he was an avid golfer and swimmer.
