Its been 7 years and I still think back to sterling, I wasn't in your class but we got to hang out in the front office while waiting for mom to wrap up her work for the day. Too this day I still use the writing skills you helped me learn while helping me figure out how to write in general, still making up my own grammatical rules though. I find comfort and advice in the music you left with us, especially these days starting a family post covid, I'm pretty frequently waking up sick and sore. Its a helpful reminder to go through the motions before they go through you, even on the days I want nothing to do with motion. Wish we could have hung out as adults, I miss you Big Matt.

Oberst Family,  you have my deepest sympathies. I think of you all and Matt often because he had a huge influence on the music I listen to.  When we would all come visit you in Omaha, I was listening to the pop music of the time, and he and Connor and Justin told me about different music; punk, alternative, the Smiths, so many things. I have such fond memories of our family vacations. I think about you often and hope you all are doing well and sending you love. I think you need to know that as time passes people do not forget and the memories will always be there.

Matt was a quintessential mentor and friend to so many, and I'm a better person for having known him. Rest in peace.

Matt was kind and funny and loved to mess with people . He was a a teacher, a friend and a confidant when you needed one. He was the very school of the middle school where he had taught at since it started. His kindness and boisterous laughter could light up a room and if cared he about you, he teased you mercilessly. Most teachers don't touch people like he did. He made you feel special and like you were capable of anything. His chicken and camping trip graduation ceremonies on the camping trip were legendary. Matt was extraordinary and to anyone who knew him, the world is just a little less bright without him. 

Dear Matt & Nancy: I just learned today about Matty. So touched to see that that name has stuck with him through life. The last time I saw Matty, I was walking with him on my shoulder. Precious child of God. May Christ be with you and His Mother console you. I cannot imagine the pain in your and Justin's and Conor's hearts, and most certainly John's and Annabelle's. You all will get through this by living out your lives with love for others always, as Matty would want, one day at a time. Such a devastating loss. My heart wells with pain, and while I know the abundant tears for you won't help, I hope that the knowledge that your grief is shared by so many will alleviate some of the weight.

Matt was such a sweet, kind hearted and funny friend. He was also a colleague and teacher to my children. He will be dearly missed.

Matt was incredible influence on my life. I will never forget my time with him at Sterling and the community he fostered there. He taught me a love of history, he taught me to be kind, he taught me how to play football, and most importantly he taught me to be confident in myself. Every time since that I have reached higher and made new achievements, I truly have still thought back to middle school where it all began. I know Matt has had an integral role in the person I am today. After his passing, many students have reconnected and expressed the exact same feelings. It has been overwhelming to see the impact that he has made on everyone he has taught. Until this moment I never thought I would be at a loss for words. I've seen this poem before and it will now sit perfectly in its righful place. The name Matt Oberst will never be forgotten and we will forever carry you with us...until we see each other again.

So grateful to have found such a wonderful soul to collaborate with to develop the middle school program at Sterling. Even though Matt called all the extra curricular activities "Andie's Fu- Fu stuff", he was great at showing every child that they could be better than they thought they could and expected them to find that confidence in themselves. So grateful that you taught all my children in middle school or kindergarten. So grateful that you continued teaching past the 5 years you intended...I am truly blessed to have known you. Like so many of his students, he will always be a strong influence in my life. My love and prayers go out to Annabelle, John, and the rest of his family.

Though I didn't know you then, I realize now that the kindness that Annabelle extended to Sajdah was an extension of who you are as a person. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Matt and Nancy and family. I remember Matty as a young child, then a young boy, and I remember his gentleness. We need more of that in that in the world. I am so sorry for your loss, for everyone whose lives were touched by that gentleness.

I was a colleague  and friend of Matt's for five years at Sterling, teaching art to the Middle school students we shared. He was about 24 when we met, entering marriage, and soon to be followed by delightful parenting of Johno and Annabelle. He was fiercely dedicated to his students, propelled by his own love of language, literature and history, and always music. In his own way he showed kids they  could be a cool nerds. I know his children were the love of his life. Condolences to family, and Carol, my heart is saddened with you, and I will miss Matt.

I had the privilege and pleasure of teaching with Matt for 7 years, starting fresh out of my first year of teaching. So much of what I have learned about how to be a good teacher, I learned by watching Matt at his work. The middle school was a wonderful place to teach, full of compassion, welcoming risk-taking by students and teachers alike, and teaching us all that achievement and fun were interlinked. So much of that came from Matt's effort and the way his personality and beliefs shaped the middle school into an amazing community. I am deeply grateful to have been part of that community. 

I became close friends with Matt, and will always be grateful for that friendship. Together, we weathered a number of storms and celebrated a number of triumphs. I will miss him very much; he is gone far too soon.

I don't know that I ever thanked you, out loud, for helping me feel at home in a foreign world. For listening when I felt no one else would. For never judging my actions or choices, through adulthood. For healing a burn on my hand. For sharing your family with me, and opening your doors to me, in my times of need. You never stopped being part of my foundation. 
I can't put into words how much my heart hurts that I won't see you again, in this lifetime. Saying that, I can't imagine the pain and loss your family is feeling. My heart is with them, always. 
You are my hero.

Matt was an inspiration to both of my kids as they went through the MS experience.  I am in awe of his ability to truly relate and touch their lives. His love for education and for the kids he taught was felt far beyond the classroom.  This is heartbreaking.  My hope is that John and Annabelle will know how much influence their Dad had on so many.  They should be so very proud. Matt was extraordinary!!!

I worked with Matt at Sterling for 11 years. Matt was one of the first people I met there. He was very welcoming my first year there. I'll miss the good old days at Sterling. I had the honor of teaching both John and Annabelle. He will be missed by so many. Gone too soon.

At times like this it is hard to understand, to reason, the 'why' of it all.  The loss of Matt is difficult to process and still hard to believe, yet undoubtedly there is also clarity; an  affirmation of what we already knew...in how many young lives this brilliant educator touched and the profound impact he had upon them; in the respect and admiration he earned from those who knew him; in how he enriched the lives of all those who surrounded him; and clarity in how very much he was loved.  I have to believe some things are just bigger than we are and it is not meant for us to know the 'why'. 

Although our hearts are heavy from the early departure of this extraordinary, dedicated man, there is much to be appreciated in the celebration of his life while here. 

Matt, you live among the stars now and I know your light will shine down upon us all.  May you rest in peace; you will be dearly missed by those left behind.

To Matt's children, family, friends, colleagues, students and the Sterling Montessori family, may you find solace in the days ahead to help dry your tears, so you once again can think of him with a smile.

Matt has been the single most influential person I've ever known. He continued to be my teacher long after I left Sterling and someone I considered not only a mentor, but a friend as well. I was in his class 15 years ago, and he remained close ever since. It is with such a heavy heart that I send my love and condolences to his children and family. Matt was a teacher, mentor, and friend to both of our sons while they were at Sterling.  He showed so much compassion and intelligence through his teaching. Our kids are fine young men now, due in part to Matt's years of influence on them. We are devastated by this loss and our hearts go out to Matt's kids and family. The world will never be the same for them but it is a finer place for Matt having been in it.

I am saddened to hear about this. Matt was my teacher when I was in middle school at Sterling. He was the best teacher I ever had at Sterling and a great role model. The world is definitely going to feel smaller without him! I will miss him with every fiber of my heart, as will everyone else who knew him! He was the best! We miss you very much Matt!

Matt had such a huge impact on my daughter, Katlyn.   He inspired and pushed her to excel at school and her personal life. He was so much more than a wonderful teacher, he was a good friend.  We were so blessed to have him in our lives.  We will miss him dearly.

Although I've only known you for 3 years, I feel like I've always known you. So this is new reality is very hard. Working at Sterling, I am glad that I got to experience your teaching first-hand. It makes me a bit envious of all the kids that had you as a teacher and mentor at a very impressionable time in their lives. They will certainly never forget you, and neither will I. I hope you're at peace, my friend, and I wish that for your family and the many people who love you.

I did not know Matt personally, but I have had the chance to coach his son John. The greatest testament of parents are the children they raise and John is one of the finest young men I have had the pleasure of coaching. My heart goes out to the Oberst family and I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Two of our children were fortunate enough to have known Matt as a teacher and a friend. Matt had a great gift of being able to connect deeply with his students and instill confidence in them. He will be greatly missed.

It's been 8 years since my oldest daughter was in the middle school at Sterling but Matt remains one of the most influential persons in her life. My words can't convey just how special the program was because of him or what he gave these kids. It was something truly remarkable and I am forever grateful. Matt was a rockstar. My youngest daughter had the privilege of knowing him for only a few months, but she won't forget. Matt will live on in all the hundreds of children whose lives he's touched.

Matt is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. Despite the complications I may have presented him, he always encouraged me to do my best. His great influence in my life, as well as his passion for education, is what inspired me to pursue a teaching career myself. I hope that I can touch as many hearts as he has.

Praying for peace and comfort for the kids and family during this time. Matt made such an impression on so many kids and his memory and legacy will carry on far beyond his short visit with us.

I am saddened by this news and sadder that we lost touch when I moved. Your friendship, love of your children, love of teaching, music, and amazing cooking will stay with me forever. I hope you get to see the Rainbow Bridge and find that silly dog of yours - Darwin. I credit Darwin and g for bringing us together - those puppy walks and park time were the best. Rest easy. There are no words which can truly express the loss that we all feel, even though for some of us it has been several years since we have had you in our lives on a daily basis, for others--it was jus the other day. 
 I will never forget the prank which started me on my journey of knowing you, being there for John O's first roller coaster ride on the band trip; and the look of pure terror when Jared realized that the acorn you had given him on the fall camping trip (and which he was supposed to take care of and bring back to the Spring Camping trip intact) had de-sinigrated in his backpack and he just knew that you would know if he had replaced it with another one.  You expected much and gave just as much to the students who had the opportunity to call you Matt.  You weren't just a teacher, you were a mentor, a friend and a member of the Sterling Family--a very extended, interesting complicated, sometimes (usually) dysfunctional family--but what families aren't?!
You were one of a kind and will be missed by many!

It's been years since I've seen you, but when I heard this news it hit me pretty hard. As teaching colleagues and friends, it was easy to see how much you cared for your students and what an amazing teacher and father you were - and have continued to be. You have touched the lives of so many of us in so many wonderful ways. You made a mix cd for me years ago with the Kinks Christmas song on it--I will be playing that this week and thinking of you and how much you loved your music! Matt and his band were very formative figures for me growing up in Burlington, NC. Driving out to Chapel Hill to see Sorry About Dresden and then eventually getting to share bills, set me on the course I'm still on.  I haven't seen him in many years but I'll never forget him.  This is a huge loss.

Matt taught both our children at Sterling. Hannah and Jonathan still consider him to be one of the best, if not the best, teacher they had the privilege to know.  We will always be grateful for what he taught them and the example he set. He was a brilliant man, a loving parent, a creative musician, and an extraordinarily gifted teacher. You were truly a wonderful teacher, definitely one of if not the best teacher I've ever had. My love for History and English definitely came from being in your class and I constantly remember and cherish those days. I have many fond memories but one that definitely tops the list is when a friend and I got caught passing a note in class during a guest speaker. I remember you and Neal talking to us and congratulating us on getting in trouble for the first time. We tried so hard to keep a straight face after that day. You were undoubtedly a guiding force in my life, and my time at Sterling is a cherished memory thanks in large part to you. You introduced me to Shirley Jackson and inspired a love of horror novels. You're the reason I became an English major. You're the reason I became a teacher. I've thought of you again and again over the years with gratitude. I regret all the times I didn't reach out or visit when I had the chance. I never really put my appreciation into words. I hope you knew, regardless. You were an amazing teacher, a loving father, and an inspiration to all of your students.

Matt, as a parent, I am grateful for your gentle leadership, kindness, and support to my children.  They left middle school well-prepared for high school with amazing writing skills and great character.  I will cherish the conversations we had.  You, without a doubt, have left a huge influence on a number of students AND parents.  You left us too soon, Matt. I'll miss you forever. Peace, my friend.

It's been years I've seen or spoke with Matt. We used to play shows together when we both were in bands. I was fortunate to spend time with him often during this period. It's kinda hard to put into words.
I haven't seen you since 2012 or 2013. I came back to sterling to visit my past teachers. Mr.James, mrs.Vanessa, Mr.Neal Spaulding and yourself. It brought me back to see the classes haven't changed much, you guys are still doing things since I attended. When me and you talked I told you what I wanted to do with my life. Which is to become a great chef. A few days later i,came back brought some food to,share with you guys, since then I've been working on my craft and becoming much better. I wanted to let you know that the encouraging words from you and the rest of my teachers really made me want to go out and be the best i could. 
I really do appreciate you being in part of my life even if it was for a short while. God bless .

Matt you were the most influential teacher I have ever had and you were so fun and crazy back then. This is such a shock I still cant believe it. Ill always remember you and you will always be one of the people who have shaped me to who I am today. Thank you so much and I will never forget you
