Margaret Leahy Schneeberger

Margaret (Meg) Leahy Schneeberger was born in Elmira, NY to Thomas J. and Kathleen Chambers Leahy. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jeremiah Schneeberger, and her children, Ellen Kunkel (Isaac) of Cary, NC, Peter (Rebecca) of Richmond, VA, and Michael (Amy) of Longmont, CO. She was known as “Nana” to her nine grandchildren whom she loved: John, Megan, Caroline, and Andrew Kunkel; Erin and Joey Schneeberger; and Anne, Emma, and Cate Schneeberger. Also close to her heart were Sugar, Abby, and Keuka, her granddogs.

Meg received her BS in Education from Elmira College and a Master’s in Education from Canisius College. She taught many years in public and private schools, both in Buffalo, NY and Charlotte, NC. She reminisced often about her days, friends, and students at Mount Mercy Academy, South Park High School, and Burgard High School.

Charity work was a lifelong passion for Meg. She was a frequent volunteer in the church office at St. Michael in Cary, NC, but could also be found driving the Interfaith Food Shuttle, providing meals to migrant workers, offering breakfast to neighborhood workers, and got a big kick out of generously overtipping. She was able to achieve her dream of going on mission trips through the St. Michael Sister Parish Mission, supporting the joyful people of Nuestra Señora de Suyapa in Nueva Palestina, Honduras.

More recently, she was passionate about supporting Haiti Mission, Inc., an organization that builds homes for the people of Jérémie, Haiti. Also close to her heart were students in need of an advocate. She often championed for students who needed help at home, access to medical care, any type of financial need, or just someone in their corner. She served after school as a tutor for unwed mothers and dreamed of building a home for expectant women in need. In addition to her love for serving others, Meg had many other passions. She loved St. Faustina. Whenever Meg was faced with a difficult challenge, she would rely on St. Faustina to solve the problem or provide guidance. Her prayers were always answered. She also loved Duke basketball (primarily Coach K), Keuka Lake, cruising, Elvis, McDonald’s Happy Meals, cardinals, gardenias, the stock market, storing tissues in her sleeve, and “chewing the fat” on the phone with friends and family near and far. Meg was a storyteller, baker, kids’ teams spectator, family historian, carpool driver, straight talker, holiday gravy maker, and comedian. She will be dearly missed.

Meg’s family would love to celebrate her life with you. They will be receiving friends on Friday, April 29th, from 9:30 to 10:30 at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church at 804 High House Rd. At 11:00, there will be a Mass of Christian Burial followed by inurnment and a luncheon in the Parish Center. For those unable to attend, the Mass will be livestreamed through the St Michael website.
