Joseph “Joe” Anthony Ghiold, age 69, of Cary, NC sadly passed away unexpectedly in his home on September 23, 2024. He was born in Brooklyn, NY April 26, 1955 to Harry Louis Ghiold and Marion Nassisi Ghiold.
Joe had a happy and active childhood in Brooklyn and Yonkers surrounded by a close-knit Italian American family. He attended undergraduate studies at the State University of New York, Binghamton before earning his Doctor of Natural Sciences & Geosciences at University of Tübingen in Germany. His first post-graduate work was as a professor in the Geology department at Louisiana State University. As he continued his career in geology, he worked for a mix of private firms and government departments in Louisiana, Florida, and North Carolina including: Keith and Schnars, Environmental Assessment Management, S&ME, and most recently, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality from which he retired.
He married his wife of 39 years, Sharon Gomillion Ghiold, on August 3, 1985 in Louisiana. He had a passion for family, the outdoors, running, biking, swimming. He appreciated both classical music and modern classics such as the Beetles. He enjoyed comedy including the tv show Seinfeld and films from Mel Brooks and the Marx Brothers. He was also a dedicated sports fan of the New York Rangers, New York Yankees, and New York Giants. Most of all, he was a kind soul who believed in charity and always tried to put the needs of his family before his own.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Marion Ghiold.
Joe is survived by his loving wife Sharon and their sons Kevin and Christopher Ghiold; his older siblings Henry Ghiold and Louise Kaufman and their families.
For those interested in attending upcoming services, visitation will be from 10:30am – 11am on Monday, September 30, 2024 at Resurrection Lutheran Church at 100 W Lochmere Dr., Cary, NC. The funeral service will be held at the same location at 11am that morning.
