John was a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished friend. He proudly served in the Air Force and his dedication to his country was matched only by his commitment to his family.
Following his military service, he graduated from NC State with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and later receive his Master's in Physics from Franklin and Marshall College. He had a successful career as a Mechanical Engineer with IBM, where he made a lasting impact and formed many friendships. Some of his work modernizing cash registers and point of sale transactions is still in use today.
John loved to learn and spent many hours pursuing continuing education in physics and creative writing. He loved Star Wars, mysteries and westerns, and was always up for an evening of good old-fashioned monster movies. An avid reader, he read widely and could often be found in the local library, choosing books from a confounding number of genres and authors. Always ready with a joke, his laughter and warmth touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-five years, Sarah Watts; daughter, Jennifer Derrick; and son-in-law, Jimmy Derrick.
The family wishes to thank his team of caregivers from A Better Solution in Home Care and Transitions LifeCare Hospice who made his last days easier. Special thanks to Jasmine, Nikki, Lakeshia, and Angela.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 14, 2024 at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Red Cross.
