Born May 13, 1940 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England he was preceded in death by his parents, Major Frederick Harris and Sarah Harrison Harris, and son Anthony John Harris.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Cynthia Joan Dennis Harris of Cary, North Carolina, sister Doreen Hansen of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and son, David Jonathan Harris and fiancée, Stacie Holmes of Clayton, North Carolina.
At Roundhay High School he was proud of his service with the Sea Cadets Corps and he went on a lot of forays over a period of three years. During this time as well, he loved playing on his school’s rugby team. He attended Leeds Technical College where he received a degree in mechanical engineering. During an apprenticeship with Rose Forgrove, he worked for them building packaging equipment and this led to him becoming a service engineer. This started him on his travels installing and repairing wrapping equipment around the world. In 1978, he moved the family to Michigan where he worked for Life Savers Candy until 1990. Having plowed much snow, he jumped at the opportunity to move to Cary, North Carolina where he continued as a service engineer for Carle & Montanari and then SIE/Bosch. He retired in 2004 and started his own consulting company, White Rose Packaging.
John’s interests were many and varied. Not least of which was his ability to engineer homespun inventions that never ceased to amaze his family. He was a member of his church’s choir as a boy through adulthood. He also took part in several amateur productions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and musical comedies. This love was shared by his wife as well. He had a real passion for Formula One Racing. He also took a lot of pleasure working with Cary Police Bike Refurbishing Program where his son, David, joined him for many a Saturday. At home he spent time working on jigsaw puzzles often with family members. He loved going on vacation trips to Mexico with his family.
Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, North Carolina 27511.
