I have had the privilege of knowing Joe for the past three decades and I always saw Joe Busby as an energetic, enthusiastic, educator fully committed to his students and our profession. Joe’s always present smile will permanently be remembered! 

Dr. Busby was a professor in our department at Indiana State 18 years ago.  I was hoping to reconnect with him and found that he is no longer with us.  He was a dynamic educator that moved students through storytelling and relationship building.  His methods helped reshape me into a better more thoughtful educator and human being while pressing me to think outside of my own self.   Sometimes we find those special people out there who help open our own eyes up just a bit differently to the world around us.  Dr. Busby did that for me and so many others.  I am saddened for his passing last year, and am grateful to have learned from him in the short time that we all have. With a heavy heart, Cliff in SoVt.

I remember Joe coming into our Sunday School class in his red t-shirt, lugging his guitar along with a big smile on his face. I also remember him sharing his adventure riding his "murdercycle" (that's what he called it) all the way to Alaska!


I know that the one-year anniversary of Joe's passing is a painful time for Melanie and Joe's family. I am thinking of all of you today.  I remember Joe as a very upbeat and caring person. I spent several days working with Joe and others on adding a screened-in porch to a house near John's River Valley Camp near Boone, N.C. This was a joint mission trip for 3 churches.  Joe's great planning of the addition kept the work crew on task and in the right direction. I also remember Joe's love of music and was privileged to play guitar with him during the meditation times at the camp.  I miss Joe and his good humor,  kind spirit and heart.

My favorite memory is when the school administration was coming by to remodel Poe Hall, and every classroom got a complete overhaul with great new things, and then we were in the tech room and the admin walks in on Dr. Busby's class and Dr. Busby says, "Well, what are we getting? Anything nice?" the guy said, "Nope not here!" And Busby kicked him out of the room after saying a bad word and told him to not disrupt class. The next week, the whole downstairs of Poe was tiling

Dr. Busby was a knight. Through my struggles with mental health and through the compassion of his heart, he (and the Great Eight) literally adopted me that one day the earth shook (only we know, but I will never forget that walk). I want you to know, I was not nor never was mad at you for that, but I know it made you sad. You are so strong, and you are going to teach us wonderful things and protect us while we are here still. Yet, you came down like a lotus and walked me to that place, I was embarrassed to come back, and The Great Eight welcomed me with open arms and adopted me, your actions saved my life and your teaching saved my soul, while I learned to double major in Education and containing my brain.

Thanks for protecting me.

I promise to remember to take my meds on time, as I have been, keep doing research and teaching forever, and I will teach forever like you are doing. The Great Eight is still the Great Eight. I can't wait to read your meta on all the things you are learning, now, on your new journey, and I ask you to watch over us as we continue to pray for peace, and for you to teach us while we are on our way to school.

"Joe brought light and love to the hearts of every person he knew" This couldn't be a more true statement. There is a joy and light-heartedness about Joe that always blessed me. I've had various heavy heart moments--some I’d share at church and some I hadn't; and it was like every time I needed lifting Joe would say something random, or funny, or spot on in a way that no one else could that would just kick me out of my heaviness. Perhaps the most distinct memory I have of Joe is how he read scripture. The text came alive when he read. I listened when he read. And I heard Joe loud and center when he read... AND that never distracted me from hearing the spirit through his animation and enthusiasm while he read. That is a gift I can't describe. For some that may seem trivial, but as clergy, and someone who think deeply about what it means to gather in community to hear from God... that meant the world. You will be missed greatly. And I'm grateful to have known you, even for just the few years I have. I'll never read scripture the same... and I'll often hear your voice when God speaks-- a jovial, light-hearted, passionate and kind voice I'll cherish.


I went to North Pike High School with Joe, lived about 3 miles from his home place. Ironically, I lived fairly close to him in North Carolina. Joe was one person that I always remembered with a huge smile on his face. He was always joking and keeping everyones spirits up. So great to see what an impact my neighbor had on the world.

I met Dr. Busby my freshman year when he was one of my TSA advisors, and took both of his classes back to back throughout my sophomore and junior years. He was truly one of the best teachers I’ve had, being patient and caring. He always had a smile and and said hello to me each day when I walked in, and graced me with many of his stories. In TSA he had endless wisdom and guided me through what is now my favorite event, which involves making carbon dioxide powered dragster cars. Almost everything I know now about woodwork and using machinery came from him, and I’m forever grateful for the effect he’s had on me as a person, student, and member of TSA. I’m forever grateful for the time he spent with us, and will miss him greatly.

Wonderful Joe was my Cary friend from a Triangle network group whose members support and advise each other through life challenges via meetings, calls, texts, and on line.  Joe was a true servant leader who will be greatly missed by many!  He was a ROCK we leaned on because Joe was the greatest- the guy who called around most often to stay in touch, say hi,  encourage, and offer a prayer of support.  

During frequent business trips, I try to see a few tourist sights in my travels. Joe had an amazing knack to call me at those odd times on a trip when I'd be standing on a Utah mountain scenic overlook above Salt Lake City, or walking across 'George Bailey Bridge' in Seneca Falls NY (the model movie town for "It's a Wonderful Life").  Over 5 years Joe and I developed a running joke. I answer my mobile phone saying "Hi Joe! You've found me again- guess where I am right now?!"

I no longer need my phone to talk to Joe!  Like the movie angel Clarence, Joe is right there guiding all of us from that heavenly cloud of witnesses!  The fantastic influence of Joe Busby's Wonderful Life will be felt by his many friends like ripples in an ever-flowing river of hope!  May God Bless Joe Busby and Family!

I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. My last memory of Joe was when he was part of the joint mission trip of Covenant Christian Church, Cary First Christian Church and Good Shepherd United Church of Christ. I believe that trip was in 2015 at John's River Valley Camp in Collettsville, NC. Joe's carpentry skills were instrumental in our group's project of building a screened -in porch for a resident living near the camp.  He planned the addition and worked with the team to complete the project by the end of our week there.

I also joined Joe and others during the trip in playing guitar and singing  during worship and reflection times at the camp. I have a great appreciation for Joe's humor and outgoing and positive  nature. His uplifting presence among was certainly very infectious!

I lifted all of you up in prayer today at our Zoom worship service at GSUCC and continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Joe's passing.
I have fond memories of practicing and performing with Joe as part of the music ensemble group during Covenant's 9:00 service. I'll remember his smile and laughter that filled the room with light and joy. He had a caring, loving heart and a zest for life that was contagious.

Dr. Busby was my teacher for Diversified Technology at the Lincoln County Vo-Tech Center in 1988-89.  Saying that he made an impression on me would be an understatement.  Busby, as he let us call him, was a man of great compassion and understanding.  In the 30 years since this class, Busby still crosses my mind with fondness. I was fortunate enough to have Dr.Busby as my teacher Freshman year and last semester as a Senior at Panther Creek High School. When I heard of his passing, I was shocked and devastated with deep sorrow. Dr.Busby was the nicest person to everyone and taught me a lot through the years. He was the reason, I could look at my woodwork and say "I really did that" with a face full of joy. I remember one day in class, after I had finished a project, he said he was proud of the young lady I had become. It might have sounded like a small thing, but his words had an impact on me, I went home smiling for the rest of that week. I could never do enough for Dr.Busby in return for what he did for me, but I promise to spread the love. The love that he spread to me, his students, colleagues, and family. Everyone.

Joe's passing remains a tremendous shock. Reading all these wonderful memories by others leaves me frankly embarrassed that I knew so little about Joe. I knew him as a friend, musician, and humble Christian. His students' comments are truly inspiring, as well as all his academic accomplishments, but I will have to remember him as a humerous and humble Christian who delighted friends, family, and God.

Joe was known for many contributions to our profession, but he was perhaps known best for his engaging smile, his sense of joy, and his unrivaled dedication to the students with which he taught—inside and outside the classroom. He will be missed in our profession, but he will also be remembered—for he made a lasting impression on so many, and that will be passed on to future generations.

Dr. Busby was truly one of the most energetic professors that I had the pleasure to learn under. He almost always had a smile on his face and his demeanor and energy was contagious. I recall fondly a time when he & I rode our motorcycles out to a conference in Tennessee and on our way home, we rode through the Tail of the Dragon. I have many fond memories of Dr. Busby and will be lifting up his family in prayer through this trying time. May God bless you and give you peace!

Dr. Busby was more than a TED teacher and a TSA State Advisor, he was also a mentor and a counselor. He always made time in his schedule, no matter how busy he was, to see that all of his students. including me, were always doing good. He also shared personal stories and his wisdom in order to inspire those around him and guide them in the right direction. His impact on his students, colleagues, Panther Creek High School, and North Carolina TSA will never be forgotten, and it will never be the same without him.

You know Joe was a character!  He was so loved by many in many states, but here in Mississippi, we claimed him as one of our own!  He was such an inspiration!  

I am so sorry to hear of his passing!!!  He will be missed!  

If there was anyone who could make me cry and laugh in a matter of seconds, it was Joe. I’ve never met anyone as tender as he was. He was never afraid to embrace. He always had a smile and I always left his presence feeling empowered. What I’m gonna miss the most is the affirmation that he spoke every time we communicated, “You are a worthwhile person deserving of pride!” to which I responded “you too big guy”. 
 
I love you big guy! and I’m gonna miss you. Thanks for being a “hidden figure” in my life for so long.

I didn't have the opportunity of getting to know him as much as others had,  but the times that I need meet and chat with him at TSA State and National Conferences , I knew that I was in the presence of a very kind soul.
You all are in my thoughts and prayers.   

I was a student of Dr.Busby from Panther Creek High School, and he was also my advisor for TSA. I still remember walking into his class, first class, first period of freshman year. His class was always fun, enthusiastic, and interesting. We 3D modeled, printed, made bottle rockets, designed and tested dragsters, and did a lot of woodwork. In TSA, he always gave us good advice, supported, and encouraged us. He helped us with our projects and motivated us to challenge ourselves.  I used to see him in the hallways every day, and it saddens me that I won't be able to see him anymore.  He was always happy and always had a smile on his face.  He will be dearly missed, and TSA and highschool will never be the same again. He greatly influenced my life and I will always remember him. Thank you!

Joe was a faithful member of the Seekers Sunday School class at Covenant Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Cary NC for years. He brought with him such s sense of joy. I am smiling as I remember his funny stories. He found humor in serious issues and his faith was evident in everything he did. We will miss him and our class will never be the same.


Joe will always be remembered  as an energetic, enthusiastic, educator fully committed to his students and the Technology and Engineering Education profession. We will miss him dearly! 

I am in complete shock to hear of your passing Joe. You were always one of my favorite coworkers at Panther Creek. You were always so wise, kind hearted, and full of life anytime I saw you. Even after I left PC, I looked forward to continuing my work with TSA, and witnessing all of the awesome work you guys continued to do with those kids. I grew up with Joe.  I have lots of good memories of him at the local swim hole. ( Felders Campground). So sorry for your loss

I was a student of Dr. Busby’s at Panther Creek High School. Beginning freshman year, he was one of my favorite teachers. He cared so much about all of his students, and always wanted to make us happy. I remember going outside towards the end of the school year and shooting bottle rockets, and in later classes he would teach us to make pens, footstools, and 3D prints. He was always ambitious and keeping us busy, but without a doubt there to help us when we needed it. He encouraged me to reach further and pursue more advanced classes and gave me opportunities to teach others. He was interested in our personal lives and loved telling us stories of his own. Dr. Busby is a big reason I became interested in engineering design, and I’ll always remember the impact he has made on my life. 

Our son, a senior at Panther Creek High School,  just had Dr. Busby last semester for his TED class. He came home weekly with stories of the great things they were doing in this class - something I seldom hear from him.  It was obvious what a huge impact Dr. Busby had on our son and all his students.  His passing will be a great loss to our school.  Our family sends our condolences to all of the family and loved ones of Dr. Busby in their time of sorrow. 

Joe, I’ll always remember you!  You were a great friend and you taught me a lot.  I’ll miss you for sure. I honestly can’t believe that you’re gone and that I’m typing any of these words.  

My daughter had  Dr. Busby her freshman year at Panther Creek High School. She is a senior now and his name still comes up as being a favorite throughout the last 4 years. It was obvious he enjoyed his job! He will be missed at Panther Creek.  Sending love to his family. 

Oh how myself and so many enjoyed our time together with Joe in the mix. He always shared words of encouragement and wisdom  and would lend a helping hand when needed. Wonderful stories of his motorcycle travels and the adventures many wishes they could of been on. As a fellow teacher and TSA advisor he always reminded other it was All for the students to grow and become the best they could be. God bless all who are better to have known Joe.

Joe Busby was my first professor at NC State when I started my journey back to school. His love for teaching and dedication to his craft is what did, and still does, inspire me to be the best educator I can be. Our friendship grew over the four years I spent at NC State, and continued to grow as I went on to graduate school. There have been many influences in my life, but none so central to my teaching as Joe’s. I only hope I can be as uncommonly kind as Joe always was. We’ve traveled to conferences, and rode motorcycles together, and laughed over so many memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, children, and friends. Love ya Joe, and we mean it.

Dr. Joe was a bright light in this world. Quick with a smile or a joke, he graced the halls of Panther Creek high school with hope and encouragement for students and staff alike. He was adored by his students, revered by his colleagues and will be deeply missed. I'm sending prayers of comfort and healing to his family and to all those who loved him.


Joe was my Graduate Teaching Assistant at NC State U when he was in our graduate program.  He was so effective that, against university norms, we hired him right away and he taught for us for many years.  As Chair of the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee in VA many years ago and as the lead professor in our teacher education student teaching program, I have observed and supervised many outstanding teachers.  In my opinion, Joe R. Busby was the best teacher that I have ever known, bar none!  His concern for getting the best from each student and his love combined with diligent planning and preparation to make his classroom a special place.  Anyone who knew him also will remember his infectious smile, even at 7AM, and the hugs he gave without warning.  I miss him greatly and I pray for Melanie, his children, and the students who are surely missing him so much.  I thank my LORD that I had the privilege to know and learn from Joe, my friend and colleague.  Hugs to you, Joe.  Jim Haynie 

When I think of Joe, I smile. His life touched so many. Joe always greeted me with a big smile and firm hand shake. I am proud to say he and I were friends for many years. I worked with him through activities in ITEEA and TEECA. Joe cared for everyone. He will be missed by many friends, and family. My sympathies from Clemson, SC.  


I worked with Joe many decades, here in Indiana and later through ITEEA and TEECA efforts.  He ALWAYS had a smile on his face.
