Joan graduated from Saint Mary’s High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. Following graduation, she enjoyed living and working at the VA Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. In 1957, Joan married James A. McKane, Jr., a union that lasted 62 wonderful years and together they raised five beautiful and loving children.
During her children’s early years, Joan volunteered freely and generously of her time as a Cub and Girl Scout leader, school volunteer, swim team and Little League Team Mom. Joan resumed her nursing career once their children entered school and retired in 1997 as a director in the Admissions and Forensics Unit at Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute in Chattanooga, TN. Prior to that, Joan worked as a hospital RN as well as Charge Nurse at multiple geriatric care facilities in North Carolina.
She is survived by her five children: Kevin (Ellen), Mark, Robert (Candace), Joanne, and Trish (John), seven grandchildren: Kent and Will McKane, Joseph McKane, Brian Wall, Emily Wall Page, Jack Hart, Kate Lynch, and her dear niece and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her much beloved husband, Jim, her sister, Mary Alice, and her brother Ray.
Joan was a devout life-long Catholic and served as a hospital Eucharistic Minister. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex, NC on Friday, September 15, 2023. The family will receive friends at 10:30am in the church vestibule. The services will start with a Eulogy at 10:45am and Mass to begin at 11:00am in the sanctuary. Inurnment will follow the Mass at St. Andrew’s Columbarium.
