She was born on June 16, 1916, in Roanoke VA, to the late Jasper N and Mary Motley Wamsley.
Hazel was the oldest of eleven children growing up in Petersburg, VA, helping to raise her younger sisters and baking some of the best homemade biscuits in town. She spent many years of her life traveling with her husband “Herb” to various air force bases training new pilots. She and Herb restored several vintage airplanes themselves. They used the old Mitchell dairy barn on Dixon Street in Cary to complete the restoration of the last one. “Haze” also was an expert seamstress. During her early years she worked sewing and assembling parachutes and survival equipment for the military during WW II. Hazel and her family were some of the “oldtimer” residents of Cary watching the town of one traffic signal grow into a large progressive city. She was one the founding members of Christ the King Lutheran Church and loved the Lord. She is now at peace and with Herb in Heaven.
In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her Husband, Herbert G. Powell.
She is survived by her children, Patricia Powell, Apex, NC; Herbert E. Powell (Mildred), Kinston, NC; Robert Powell (Marlene), Ft. Walton Beach, FL; William Powell, Cary, NC; John Powell (Patty), Picayune, MS; one sister, Inez Minetree, Orlean, VA; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Christ the King Lutheran Church, Cary, NC.
