Gary was a husband, father, grandfather, great, grandfather, and Christian, born on October 2, 1932, in Cary, North Carolina. He graduated from Cary High School, the first public high school in North Carolina, in 1952.
Gary met the love of his life Mary Kent, “Toots or Tootsie”, in 1953, and after a short courtship, they married on April 10, 1954. Gary was drafted into the army in 1954 and served two years as a Specialist 3rd Class (T), Cryptographer in the Company A 8235th Signal Service Battalion within the US Army Far East Command in Tokyo, Japan.
Upon his return, he worked as a repairman for Singer Sewing Machine until becoming employed by the United States Postal Service in Cary, North Carolina. He retired from the US Postal Service in 1992. However, Gary’s retirement was short-lived; he began working at his daughter and son-in-law’s service station as a greeter, inventory analyst/purchasing agent, and advisor. Gary loved spot fishing, gardening, planning class reunions, building trinkets, but most of all Gary loved his family and country. Anyone who met Gary immediately became his friend.
He was preceded in death by his father Will Kent, mother Lillie Culpepper Kent, and siblings Gladstone Kent and wife Sarah, Bernice Lasater and husband Walter, Garnett Kent and Billy Kent and wife Christie, and nephew Ronnie Lasater and William Kent.
Mr. Kent is survived by his wife and two daughters, Kimberly Barker and her husband Mike Barker, and Janet Phillips, four grandchildren, Kendra Selph and husband Jeff, Bryan Barker and wife Jaclyn, Sarah Foreman and husband Cody, Courtney Phillips, six great, grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
