Buzz was born on August 20th 1933 in Mullins, SC to Forrest Clyde Hentz Sr. and Jennie Byrd Hentz.
Buzz graduated from high school in Pomaria, SC. He went on to Newberry College where he earned an English degree with a minor in Physical Sciences. He then went on to UNC-Chapel Hill where he met and married Carole Jean Hylton who was a nursing student. He had to pause his graduate studies for 3 years to provide for his family so he took a teaching position at Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Virginia. He returned to UNC where he completed his Master's degree and PhD in Chemistry. He then became a Chemistry professor at NC State University and taught there for 40 years.
During his tenure at NC State he earned several teaching awards, honors and opportunities. The Holladay Medal for Excellence is the highest honor awarded by the University to faculty who exhibit notable service to NC State University. He also spent five years as a "chief reader" for the National AP Exams in Chemistry, traveling to New Jersey, Michigan, Utah and Florida to participate in board meetings and the development of testing questions.
Buzz and Carole were married on December 21, 1957 and were married for 60 years until her death in 2018. Buzz enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, college and local sports and had a love of the Periodic Table. He and Carole also enjoyed playing bridge often hosting bridge clubs at their home.
Buzz is preceded in death by his wife Carole and his daughter, Kirsten Hentz Tredway.
Buzz is survived by his children, Sharon Hentz (Donna), Laura Hentz Cooper (Jerry), Forrest Hentz (Laura), and John Preston Hentz; his grandchildren (who referred to him as Papa Buzz), Joshua Smith (Jason), Jake Cooper, Jeanna Cooper, William Tredway VI, and Alison Hentz.
