Known to most as Watson or sometimes E.W., Mr. Sauls was born March 26, 1931, in Wake County to the late Ernest Roy Sauls and Sallie Belle Holt Sauls. He grew up in Apex and was a 1949 graduate of Apex High School.
He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952-1954. After his honorable discharge he graduated from the N.C. Highway Patrol School and began what would be a 30-year-career with the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles. He retired in 1985.
In his retirement, he enjoyed working in his yard and in his workshop, as well as watching his grandsons in their sporting endeavors. He felt blessed to have a strong relationship with them.
He was a proud member of the American Legion, Cary Chapter. A founding member of Cary’s Bethel Baptist Church, he served as head usher for 20 years.
Watson is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rebecca Lee Williams Sauls; son, Barry Sauls, of Boone; grandsons, Stedman, August and Sterling Sauls; sister, Estelle Sauls Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, at Hillcrest Cemetery, in Cary. Memorial tributes and messages can be left for the family in the "Add a Memory" Box below. Brown Wynne of Cary is honored to be serving the Sauls family.
