Susan McGowan Alexander, 83, of Cartersville, GA passed away Saturday, September 7, 2019. Born and raised in Cartersville, Ga. Susan Leah McGowan Alexander was the daughter of the late Sam and Leah Dodds McGowan. Her father was a former Cartersville mayor and she loved this city and sought to preserve its history through the Etowah Valley Historical Society. A proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she hostesses the annual tea this spring commemorating the DARs over 100 years in Bartow County.
Susan graduated from Cartersville schools, continued her education at Virginia Intermont and graduated from University of Georgia in 1959. Susan married James O'Hanlon Alexander,III in. The Alexanders resided in East Point Ga where they raised their beloved son and pride and joy, James OHanlon Alexander IV "Sandy". Susan was a kindergarten teacher and director for many years at her church In East Point. Susan and JO retired to her childhood home in Cartersville in 1987. The light of her life were her granddaughters Caroline McGowan "Callie " Alexander and Margaret O'Hanlon "Maggie " Alexander. Susan is remembered for her beauty, grace, delightful nature and sense of humor. She maintained an immaculate home and was a great cook. She enjoyed working in her yard and garden and was a lover of cats. The beautiful and historic Alexander home was the gathering place for Cartersville parades, family holidays, teas and many hours of neighbors visiting on the porch. Susan will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at eleven o’clock in the morning at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cartersville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Cartersville First Presbyterian Church.
