James R. Gurley III

James Richard Gurley III went home to be with the lord May 17, 2024 surrounded by his loving wife and family. James was born on May 28, 1938 to James and Dorothy Gurley of Akron Ohio. He married Laura Lynn Ludwick on Jan 1, 1989 and between them they had 5 children. Robert James Gurley, Teri Gurley, Daniel Gurley (Margi), Sharon Smith, Amy (Bob) Schwab, 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

James was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. He was a 1956 graduate of Kenmore High School. He attended Akron University and then served his country in the United States Army where he was a semi pro football athlete. He also proudly served his country in Korea.

During James’ High School years he was elected captain of the football team as a sophomore, he called all the plays for the defensive line and was voted class president and most masculine in his class. Jim received his teaching degree from Kent State University in Kent Ohio.

James was a lifelong sports enthusiast and truly had a love for any well played game. Anyone who knew James would never forget his infectious passion for educating and coaching our youth. Jim taught and coached for over 30 years. There was never a more positive voice on the sidelines than that of Jim Gurley.

Anyone who knew Jim knew his true passion in life was his family. His larger than life personality and his ornery nature were his true characteristics. He had a natural way of making those around him laugh. Jim’s favorite saying in life was “How can I soar like an Eagle when I am surrounded by a bunch of pigeons”. He was truly revered as an Eagle by his children and grandchildren and if nothing more he left them all with the belief that they were able to catch the wind and soar through life.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents James and Dorothy and his son Robert (Bobby) Gurley.

Gathering of Family and Friends will be held at 11am on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 with Mass of Resurection at 12pm at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 850 Douthit Ferry Rd, Cartersville, GA with Rev. Kevin Hargaden officaiting.
