She graduated from St. Joseph Hospital Nursing School in Marshfield, WI, in 1946. She then completed the Cadet Nursing Program, even though WWII had ended. Feeling an obligation to the national effort and having an adventurous spirit, she joined the National Polio Foundation personnel pool in the fight against a polio epidemic which was sweeping the nation. She accepted assignments of 30-90 days where ever there was a crisis. This took her to Boston, Detroit, Denver, Des Moines, Seattle and Texas. She married Stuart Charles Walsdorf in 1955. She expanded her work in the pediatric and ob/gyn nursing fields. Lorraine retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas in Dallas, where she worked in pre-certifications for 21 years.
Her parish life at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Farmers Branch, Texas, included serving on the Catholic Daughters of America (CDA) for over 20 years and serving as the Chairperson for the CDA Fashion show for 10 years. Lorraine enjoyed activities such as serving at her parish as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, being involved in activities with the Catholic Daughters and the Keenagers Club, travelling, cooking and entertaining, and rooting for her favorite sports teams the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers.
She is preceded in death by her husband Stuart C. Walsdorf, her brother M.T. Szatalowicz and wife Helen, her sister Theresa Szatalowicz and her brother-in-law Wayne Gifford. She is survived by her sons Louis and wife Marisa Walsdorf and Douglas and wife Lynn Walsdorf; brother F.T. Satalowich and wife Roberta; sister Clara Gifford; grandchildren Christian, Julia, Zachary and Rachel.
A time of visitation will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2014 from 6:30-8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Rhoton Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 12 noon at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Farmers Branch. Lorraine will be laid to rest at Calvary Hill Mausoleum at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Lorraine's honor to Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Farmers Branch.
