Dr. Charlie T. Grice, PhD, Sergeant Major, U.S. Army, retired, passed away after a long illness, at the age of 82, in the Hospice House on March 26, 2014. He was born in Grady, AR, a small town south of Little Rock on June 26, 1931 to Toy and Lillie Grice. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Little Rock and after a year at Dunbar Junior College, entered the military service in 1951. He served in Germany, Korea, Vietnam and various military installations in the U.S. He married his wife of almost 60 years, Charlotte while stationed in Germany. His last military assignment was with the University of Toledo in Ohio, as assistant professor of Military Science. While with the university, he earned a Doctorate of Guidance and Counselor Education, specializing in Family Therapy/Administration and Supervision. After his retirement from the military in 1977, he was employed as a Court Counselor, Lucas County Court of Domestic Relations, Toledo, Ohio; Children Services Board and as the Executive Director of the Toledo Community Service Center, a shelter for homeless families. He was also employed part-time as a Clinical Therapist with the Ohio Harbour Behavioral Health Care Center.
Dr. Grice and his wife moved to Cape Coral in 1995 to be near their daughter and family. He was a member and elder at Abiding Love Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Toy and Geleve and sisters Ernestine Givan, Georgine Russell and Ruby Massingale. He is survived by his wife Charlotte, sister Verlia Hoggard, daughter Christine Shank (Charles), grandchildren Nicole Fenske (Ben), Rod Shank (Julie) and Ryan Shank (Kelly), 7 Great Grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, as well as 9 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Coral Ridge Funeral Home & Cemetery, 1630 SW Pine Island Rd, Cape Coral, on Monday March 31, 2014 at 1pm. Entombment will follow with Full Military Honors by the U.S. Army.
