Betty Jane Pettigrew, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2024 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 80 years old. Betty was born on June 3, 1944 in Myrtle Springs, Texas to Arnett Robinson and Jewel Rose Robinson. She grew up in Canton, the middle child with two sisters, and graduated from Canton High School, class of 1961-1962. Betty went on to get her Associate Degree from Tyler Jr. College and her Nursing Degree from Texas Eastern School of Nursing in 1966.
Betty married her one true love, John Pettigrew of Edgewood, on August 20, 1966. They honeymooned in New Orleans and returned to the Canton area to begin their wonderful life of 58 years together. They raised two children, while working and living in Dallas, Houston and Betty’s favorite Colorado Springs. Betty cherished her role as wife and mother, always providing support, love and encouragement to her family. Betty and John moved back to Canton in 2018.
Betty was a nurse for over 25 years before retiring to focus on community service and other interests. Betty was active in her Church and volunteered for and took on leadership roles in many Women’s Groups and Clubs. Betty loved to travel; some of her favorite trips were to Australia in 2008 to celebrate the marriage of her son to his lovely Australian wife, many visits to see her daughter while she lived in NYC, LA and the Netherlands and traveling with John to Alaska and throughout Europe. She loved to attend the theater, passing on her passion for it to her daughter, and she enjoyed playing bridge, bunco and canasta. She was also an avid reader and loved to dote on her two shih tzus, Missy and Nicky. She dedicated herself to helping others with the same grace and kindness she extended to her family.
Betty is survived by her beloved husband, John, and her two children, Marlo and husband, Stephen Yelland of Houston and John Gregory (Greg) with wife, Lisa of Houston and granddog Pip. Betty is also survived by her sister, Annette Chambless, and extended family.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her younger sister, Patsy Robinson.
Betty suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and finally succumbed to this terrible disease after a long fight. Betty lived the last three years of her life at Arabella Athens in Memory Care. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Arabella for the compassion, care and support Betty received while living there.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Friday, September 6th at Eubank Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. with a service to follow at 12 p.m. Betty will be dearly missed and her warmth, generosity and faith will live on in the hearts and memories of all that knew and loved her.
