Bernice Miller

A funeral service for Billie "Bernice" Callahan Miller of Canton, Texas will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton, Max Callahan officiating with music provided by Erin York.

Mrs. Miller was born on December 8, 1928 in Canton, Texas; the youngest of six children, to Homer Sr. and Willie Beatrice Nail Callahan. Bernice passed away in Athens, Texas on November 8, 2022, at the age of 93.

Bernice grew up in Canton in the Wallace Community attending school there and thereafter, Canton schools. She met her husband, James Miller in Canton upon his return from World War II, and married in Canton, settling down to raise their family. Most of their life was spent in Canton enjoying the fellowship that having a large family nearby brings; each having several siblings and many extended family members.

Bernice enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, growing beautiful azaleas, baking and reading her Bible, which was never far from her favorite chair. She was an excellent seamstress and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Canton, where she enjoyed many years in her Sunday School class. She was known to her family, especially the grandchildren as "Niece" and her famous cookies were always a hit at Christmas; so much so they have been named "Niece Cookies". A close second were her pies.

Since her husband was a builder, she was accustomed to moving frequently. As soon as a new home was built, a move would transpire as soon as the house sold. Most people would not be as good-natured as Bernice about this! Another test of her good nature was the spur of the moment "Miller vacation" which usually required her packing the family of five in short order and driving all night to reach their destination.

Bernice enjoyed sharing stories of growing up in the Wallace Community, of the small school and the very long walk she had to make each day to get to school. Once, after telling the story again, her son, David, decided to take her on a drive so he could see exactly how far this walk really was. He clocked it on the car and when he told his Mom it was a mere half mile, she said that had to be wrong - it was at least several miles. She commented that her legs were just little.

Bernice is preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Miller and her parents; her five older siblings: sister, Oma Callahan Barrier; brothers, Oscar Callahan, Richard Callahan, Peace Callahan and Homer Callahan Jr., all of whom served in World War II.

She is survived by sons, David and Ann Miller of Larue, Texas, Tommy and Debbie Miller of Canton, Texas; daughter, Judy and Devon Weatherford of Canton, Texas; sisters-in-law, Ruth Callahan of Arlington, Texas, Betty Miller Clower of Athens, Texas; "Niece's" loving memory will be cherished by her fourteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made in her honor to the church or charity of your choice.
