It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Judge Leonard I. Shapiro, who died on 12/5/2024 at the age of 88. Leonard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Judith Belastock Shapiro; his son, Michael (Rebecca) Shapiro, Laurie (Benjamin) Mizrahi, Deborah (David) Dedrickson; and his grandchildren Joseph and Sarah Shapiro, Jacob and Jonah Mizrahi, and Jordan Zwetchkenbaum. He is predeceased by his parents, Sara and Max Shapiro, and his sister, Judith Shapiro Goldstein.
Leonard was born in Boston, Massachusetts and graduated from Brookline High School. He went on to earn a degree in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. While at U-Mass, Leonard joined the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, where he built lifelong friendships with his fraternity brothers.
After college, Leonard enlisted in the Army, where he was inspired by a class in military justice to pursue a career in the law. He graduated from the Boston University School of Law. After practicing Immigration Law for several years, he was elected as the president of AILA (https://aila.org). He later served for 25 years on the bench as a Federal Immigration Judge in Boston.
Leonard was happiest when enjoying the charm and beauty of Cape Cod with his family and friends. He was known for his kindness, humor and generosity, touching the lives of many.
A service to celebrate Leonard's life will be held on Tuesday, December 10th at 1:00 PM at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington Street, Canton, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HIAS at www.hias.org.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the medical staff at Reston Hospital who provided high quality care and compassionate support during his illness and final days.
