He is the fifth child of Tan Boen Siang and Oei Soie Nio, who have 4 sons and 4 daughters.
John got his Elementary education in Purbalingga, his Dutch Middle School: MULO ( Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwys) in Jakarta, his Dutch High School: AMS (Algemene Middelbare School) in Bandung. He attended Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB) majoring in Pharmacy for about three years before he studied and finished his College education in English University of Benares, Lucknow, India. His two years study in India was something that he talked and treasure very much.
In 1958 John was back in Indonesia, he got his first professional job at the Research Institute of Chemistry (Balai Penelitian Kimia) in Bogor, West Java.
In March 1963 John left Indonesia, migrated to USA. He got a job at the Blood Bank, American Red Cross in Birmingham, Alabama.
Several years later he moved to Miami, Florida, then he headed to Southern California. John had worked for Kaiser Hospital Los Angeles and then Loma Linda Hospital before he owned his Medical Lab. in Santa Monica. In 2001 John sold his business and retired.
After he retired, John who was very active in Bethel Indonesia Church LA (GBI), spent his times writing Christian books in Indonesian language, Bahasa. He wrote more than 10 books, published in Jakarta with purpose of sharing the Gospel to Indonesian people.
John married Khouw Lip Hong on December 23, 1968 in Bangkok, they only have one child/son Alexander R.Tan
John and Lip Hong became a grand parents when Alex and his wife Allison got a son Avery in 2012.
