It's difficult to believe that an entire year has passed since Caroline left us.  I think of her often and truly miss the sense of humour that we shared. It was always such a joy to get a spontaneous reaction from her.  We had some lovely and meaningful chats. I feel so blessed to have known her even if if was for just a short while.

When you are grieving, words often fail to describe how you feel. You can feel sad and isolated, overwhelmed by your emotions and especially very alone with your pain. 

Our families met in Sarnia. It was a difficult time for me back then and I found comfort speaking to Caroline. She helped me understand, as a good mother does, many different aspects of life and she was a great influence. As time moved on, our lives were separated by a number of reasons. I myself, moved to Montreal to pursue my education and being 9 hours away, I only saw the family on special occasions. It wasn’t until our parents moved to a more strategic location on Cow Island, that I was able to see them more   This brought us closer and family ties even stronger. 

You have given us so much and what will remain of you will bloom in us all. Life decided your departure and we understand the reasons why, but it does not make it any easier to accept. We have to say goodbye but your spirit will remain with us, along with your laughter, your smile and all the memories of you. You will forever be in our hearts ❤️

I loved your smile, sense of humour and strength. You made a difference in so many lives and most importantly too me is Karen who you have helped shaped into a beautiful caring woman.

I'm glad you are at peace and not having to struggle anymore.  You will always be in my heart.

One of my fondest memories was the year of my 50th birthday celebration. Caroline was unable to attend because she was in Florida for the winter months. We all know how much she hated winter! Imagine my surprise when she showed up for my celebration. I was so happy and grateful to see her!

Most people knew her as Caroline but she was Martha to me. I first met her in my mid 20’s as the mom to my new friend Karen. Karen and I became best friends quickly and with that friendship I gained two more relationships; Dick and Caroline. 
Over the years Karen and I spent many times with her family including Karen’s brothers, step brother and step sister. Caroline loved me like one of her own. She became a safe, warm space for me when I needed it and a firm, “tough love” hand the other times. Always love though. I never felt anything but love from her.

 Over the years I realized there really wasn’t anything she couldn’t do. Cooking, gardening, crafting, forever creating something special. Whether it was delicious dishes to eat, gardens to gaze at, blankets to keep you 
warm, or decor for your home she was always showing her love to those around her. I was lucky enough to be included in that love. 

It was over these early years spent on Cow Island that I began calling her Martha after Martha Stewart. She was my inspiration to learn how to cook. Gifting me my first cookbook called “How to Boil an Egg.” I’d like to think I’ve graduated from boiling eggs and I owe it all to Martha. 

She has always stood by the sides of the people she loved and I was no different. She was there through various boyfriends, who she knew pretty much from the beginning were not a good fit, to the one who did become my husband. She attended all the showers and parties leading up to my marriage and her and Dick were a stunning couple at my wedding. 

She was there for my complicated pregnancy offering love and assurance that all would be okay. And it was. 

Martha was a presence in my life that will not 
be replaced. She embodied love. And grit and compassion and perseverance. She was the best in all of us. I will deeply miss her and all the joy she brought me. I take comfort that she is with Dick sitting amongst the flowers, eating a delicious meal and smiling down at us. 

I miss a friend, who was also a relative. I shared in her intellectual curiosity, in her sharp witticisms and sense of humour, in her pleasures of reading, and in some of the many seemingly simpler things which completed who she was.
Even as her days and nights became more challenging, she continued her support of my brother, Dick, as best she could. I thank her for that.
I am fortunate to have known her, and distressed and unhappy to have lost her.

Condolences and much love to the Hansen family on the passing / life graduation  of Caroline. 
A huge and meaningful presence throughout my mom's life especially during  some of the best moments and the most challenging.  Caroline was a rock for me over the last decade and 1/2 and shared much insight, wisdom and laughter through years of email correspondence. She also lovingly created a scrapbook and 2 huge family binders cataloging the genealogy of both my parents families. I will miss her and smile fondly knowing she was well loved by many. Caroline did research on my family history at the behest of her grandson Matthew. She drafted me into her project, and that is when I got to really know and appreciate her as a mentally agile, tenacious, and generous person. Working through the internet and by telephone, she produced eight volumes of work that uncovered a lot of family history that was previously unknown to the current generation of our family. I fondly recall her infectious delight when she would call to share some new fact or connection she had uncovered in her research. 
I wish to send my sincere condolences to the rest of Caroline’s family, and pray that she rests peacefully together with my brother Ruddy.


Fondly remembered as a good friend from our days in Sarnia.  We have many many happy memories. Our condolences to Karen, Steven,Michael and all the family. Carol and Mike Baron
