With love and sadness we announce the passing of Serafina Spadafora on Family Day, February 20, 2012, at the age of 77 years. Her deep Roman Catholic faith kept her family strong and close to her heart. She joins her dear husband, Antonio Spadafora who predeceased her seven years ago and is also reunited with her mother Serafina Urso, father Giuseppe Bitonti and brother Gabriele Bitonti. She leaves behind her sons Biagio and Joseph (Dana), daughters Rosa (Gianni) and Giulia (Denver), grandchildren Teddi (Daniel), Vanessa, Alexander, Olivia, David and Dante, as well as great grandchild Taeya. She will be greatly missed by her siblings Marietta (Filippo) of France, Rosetta (Domenico) of Switzerland, Lucrezia and Isabella (Giuseppe) of Italy and Salvatore (Teresa) of Calgary, as well as nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Serafina was born in San Giovanni in Fiore, Cosenza, Italy on November 6, 1934. Much of her childhood was spent celebrating in the family vineyard, making wine and taking pride in helping with homemade sausages and bread. She joined her husband’s quest for a better life with her two sons in Calgary in 1962. She then worked for Pinecrest Farms and in the 1970’s worked for the U of C Dining Centre. Serafina’s passions in life included spending time with her grandchildren, family, friends and neighbours, cooking and serving her famous meatballs, lasagna, baking, and gardening. She also loved singing and dancing as well as helping out those in need. Serafina touched all those she met and left a lasting impression. She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, infectious laugh and generous heart. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, February 24, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Prayers following at 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Parish, 404 Northmount Place N.W., Calgary on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to thank Dr. Louw and staff at the Peter Lougheed Hospital, and especially Dr. Naidoo and the nursing staff at Agape Hospice, for providing end of life care for Serafina.
