Roberta Jean "Bobbi" Stevens, of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at the age of 96 years.
Roberta Jean Stevens was born in Wainwright, AB. In her youth, Roberta would often spend summers with her parents and siblings at the family’s cottage at Clear Lake, about 30 kilometers east of town.
After attending high school in Wainwright, Roberta worked as a Pharmacy apprentice at the University hospital in Edmonton. In the summer of 1940, during one of Roberta’s visits back home to Wainwright, she met her future husband Don, who was serving with the Armed Forces at the time. A few years later, she and Don would move to Calgary and begin to raise a family.
Aside from being a devoted mother to her children and being a dedicated homemaker, Roberta also possessed incredible tailoring and seamstress skills. She loved to knit and sew, and often created attractive, high-quality sweaters, shirts, pants and jackets for Don and her children. Roberta was also an excellent cook and baker, and enjoyed hosting parties and entertaining. She spent time volunteering in the library at William Aberhart High School in the late 70’s.
After her children left home, Roberta took up the hobby of macro photography, capturing beautiful close-up images of unique flora during her and Don’s many trips to Shuswap Lake, Arizona and Hawaii in the mid-80’s. She also loved creative writing, and entered (and won) several fictional writing contests. In 1991, Roberta became the proud author of “Feathers on the Water”, a book of autobiographical short stories about her early days in Wainwright.
In her senior years, Roberta turned her attention to Criminology. She took online Forensic courses and even attended a Citizen’s Police Academy, where she was the oldest student in the class. During her studies, she participated in a “ride along” with two officers from the Calgary Police Service, and was thrilled to be congratulated personally by Police Chief Christine Silverberg at her graduation ceremony. Roberta also loved books about forensic science and criminal behaviour, and read countless true crime stories and murder mysteries over the years.
She remained independent throughout her later years, living in her condo, reading her many true crime novels and enjoying visits with her family and grandchildren.
Roberta will be sadly missed by her surviving brother Wally (Pat), daughter Bev (Brad), son Robert (Lorine) and her two granddaughters, Kyra and Hayley.
She was predeceased by her husband Don, father Robert Asher Snyder, mother Vera Selkirk, daughter Barbara, brothers Herbert and Kirk, and sister Bea.
A private service will be held at a later date.
