It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Pui Wan Lau in Calgary, Alberta on July 30, 2023 at the age of 91 years due to complications arising from a stroke. A beloved sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Pui Wan was surrounded by loved ones in her final weeks and days until she peacefully said her goodbye.
Pui Wan was born on September 16, 1931 in a small village called Taishan in the southern province of Guangdong, China. A remarkable woman who not only survived the Japanese invasion of 1937 as a young girl but endured an impoverished life as a single mother in her teens and against all odds raised two accomplished sons. Her devotion to family did not end there and in 1981 Pui Wan immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong to help raise two grandsons who undoubtedly made her early years seem like a walk in the park as they say. Pui Wan prided herself on being able to keep the household in working order. Her sense of duty to the family unit had no bounds no matter how hard the work was. More than anything this routine gave her a sense of purpose in life. In her spare time, Pui Wan very much enjoyed the company of her friends. Daily excursions around the city on public transit collecting groceries from her favourite vendors was a freedom and a sense of independence that she very much cherished.
Pui Wan is survived by her younger brother Ying Kau; her two sons and their wives: Don and Linda Louie, Jake and Virginia Louie; her grandchildren and their respective spouses: Grant Louie and Krista Ho Lem, Garry Louie and Marina Sato, Krista Louie and Ronak Dave, and Mark Louie; and her great grandchildren: Alisha, Lianna and Luca, all of whom she loved and touched deeply.
Please join us in Celebrating her Life on Sunday, August 13th, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at Foster’s Garden Chapel Funeral Home, 3220 4th St. NW Calgary, Alberta.
Interment to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery.
