Maxine, also known to many as ‘Mackie’, was born in Nanton, Alberta on November 14, 1930 to James and Edna Dick. Growing up in Nanton, she was active in softball and figure skating, and also curled and played golf throughout her life, impressing everyone with the strength of her drives!
Maxine moved to Calgary to attend and graduate from Jacobson’s Beauty College, but then followed another calling in nursing, graduating from the Holy Cross in the class of 1954. Following her nursing career, Maxine used her expertise to help run the Calgary Associate Clinic for 18 years.
During her nursing training, she was introduced to the love of her life, Herb. Maxine and Herb were married in 1955, becoming parents to son Jim in 1956. Maxine liked nothing better than joining her family on a weekend hike or ski, but just as happy to keep the home fires burning while her boys were off on mountain adventures. Herb and Maxine would spend their vacations travelling to the UK to visit and tour around with family, or meet up with friends to explore different countries, documenting every detail in Maxine’s journals. They would also spend many weekends at cowboy poetry festivals, and often spending time with friends at either Lake Windermere or on the coast.
Maxine will be remembered for her beautiful and genuine smile, her gentle and caring nature, and her fun-loving personality. Together with Herb, Maxine was a promoter of the old ways and traditions. A gracious lady and hostess, she loved to entertain family and friends, always making everyone feel special.
Maxine will be missed by Carol and Jeff, sister-in-law Elaine, cousins Barb (David) and Doug (Helen), nieces Debbie, Terry, and Connie, honorary grandson Hayden, by relatives in the UK, and by her many special friends. She was predeceased by her husband Herb, son Jim, brother Bill, and her mother and father.
Our thanks to the doctors, nurses, caregivers and staff at AgeCare SkyPointe for their care and compassion of both Maxine and Herb during these past few years.
