Kathleen (Kit) Roman passed away peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2020 at the age of 93 years. Born in August of 1926 to Cecilia and Theodore Notland, Kit spent most of her formative years on the Notland farm near Morin, Alberta along with her brothers, Alf, Mac, Stan, Bud and Clayton, and her sister Myrtle. She completed a book-keeping degree at Camrose Lutheran College, then moved to Calgary where she took a job at the Bank of Montreal. While in Calgary, she would meet and marry Matthew Roman, a Sergeant Major in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery.
Matthew’s career moved them from Ontario to B.C. and then to Manitoba, during which time their two children, daughter Debbie and son Kim, were born in 1953 and 1956. Matthew’s death in 1969 was a harsh blow to the family, but Kit was a strong and capable woman, and she made the decision to move the family back to Calgary.
Kit guided and supported her children through public school and University while working at numerous jobs including sales associate at The Bay and Eaton’s, and as a receptionist at The Marlborough Inn and Calgary Winter Club.
Kit’s passion for life was expressed through photography, water colour painting, art and fashion. She played piano, was an avid hiker, cross country skier, gardener and an expert bird watcher. Kit was a longtime volunteer at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, and many of her bird photographs were displayed at the Bird Sanctuary and published in numerous nature and bird watching magazines and books.
Kit loved spending time with her family, holidaying together, playing board games, puzzling, sharing laughter and conversation over home cooked meals.
She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her son Kim, his wife Maggie and their son Scott; her granddaughter Lauren Steele and her husband Leo and their boys Olliver and Cohen; her granddaughter Robyn Steele and her husband Marcos and their son Julian. Kit lost her dear daughter Debbie in 2007 and they are now shining bright together. She will also be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her many relatives near and far, as well as friends and all who came to know her.
The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to all the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Dulcina Hospice for their comfort and compassionate care.
