Joseph attended and completed primary and secondary school in Tenom and in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. After graduation, he started work as a junior clerk at a bank in Kota Kinabalu. A few years later, Joseph met and fell in love with Susie, his future wife.
Joseph and Susie married in Tenom in 1957. After marriage, they moved to neighbouring Brunei where they started their family. Joseph continued to work at a major bank in Brunei until his retirement in 1981. Joseph and Susie had four children and were members of the St. Andrews Anglican Church in Brunei.
In 1981, Joseph and family immigrated to Canada, settling first in St. Albert, Alberta, and later in Calgary, Alberta. In retirement, Joseph and Susie frequently traveled back to Malaysia and Brunei. They also visited relatives in China and Hong Kong. Joseph enjoyed cooking, especially for family and gardening. Joseph is kind-hearted and selfless in caring for family and others, and is particularly proud and supportive of his family.
Joseph is survived by his daughter, Caroline Lian (Derek) of Calgary, AB; three sons, Samuel Chung of Calgary, AB, Paul Chung (Sau Peng) of Malacca, Malaysia, and Thomas Chung of Tenom, Malaysia; five grandsons, Christopher Chung of Edmonton, AB, Stephen Chung of Calgary, AB, Joseph Lian (Roxanne) of Ottawa, ON, David Lian (Tolsin) of Calgary, AB, and Ben Lian of Calgary, AB; great-grandson, Noah Lian of Ottawa, ON, and great-granddaughter, Eliora Lian of Calgary, AB. Joseph is also survived by his youngest brother, Chung Fook Min of Shenzhen, China. Joseph was predeceased by his beloved wife Susie Chung, daughter-in-law Rosslyn Chung, parents Chung Kui Fah (Chiew Yun), brothers Chung Fai, Chung Fook Sin, Chung Fook Sang, Chung Fook En, and Chung Fook Chee, sisters Chung Qui Yin, Chung Tau Yin, and Chung Chu Yin.
A Private Funeral Service will be held.
