Jane Ann Poole

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jane Ann Poole, or “Granny”, on Monday, August 28, 2023. Ann passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Calgary Alberta. She was 93. Ann was born on January 15, 1930 to Pearl and Donald Cambell in Ottawa, Ontario. She grew up in Shawville, Quebec. From an early age, as a fierce and competitive athlete, she was known for her speed and “elbows” while playing hockey. She enjoyed physical activities throughout her life to the point of taking up rollerblading, tap dancing and ballet in her golden years. As testament to her love of sport, Ann went skating with family at the Olympic Oval for her 90th birthday.

In 1952 Ann married Dr. Norman Poole. Ann and Norman then moved to Baie Comeau, Quebec where Norman set up his medical practice. They lived there on their beloved North Shore until 1987 when they moved back to Shawville, Quebec. In 2002, Ann and Norman moved to Calgary, Alberta where most of their children were living. Norman passed away in 2002 just a month shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. In 2006, Ann married Dr. Robert Paulette, a former classmate of Norman’s and a longtime family friend. Together, Ann and Bob spent many of their days on road trips to the Rocky Mountains where she would paint while Bob took photographs. After 14 wonderful years of marriage, Bob passed away in the Spring of 2020.

Ann was an accomplished watercolourist and received art training at Sir George Williams University in Montreal and later studied under Zoltan Szabo. Ann’s work can be seen in personal collections throughout North America including a piece shown in the Quebec National Assembly.

Ann was an extremely supportive mother and grandmother. Almost everyone in her family lived with her at one point or another. Her home was without a doubt the family hub. Ann hosted frequent family parties and get – togethers. Ann also enjoyed the spontaneous visits, over the fence chats, walks and coffees with her friends and neighbours, who will all fondly remember her wit, charm, loving personality and wisdom.

Ann was predeceased by her two brothers, Douglas and Urquhart Campbell and is survived by her children Peter, Jane, Judi (Phil), Douglas (Roselle), Alexander (Hildur); her grandsons, Samuel (Josie), William, Norman and Leif: her step-children Wendy (Richard), Woody (Diane), Laurie (Marty) and Jane; her step-grandchildren, James, Eric, Elly, Edward, Josh, Cameron and Maggie.
