My sincerest condolences to Sam and the rest of the family.

I am so grateful to have been able to spend precious time with my Uncle Hua Cai Tang, my Mother's brother.  We both shared a love and passion for watercolor painting.  A few times over the years, he would show me his collection of paintings, and I would show him a few of mine in the western style.  Once, years ago, through a student interpreter, he taught me some Chinese watercolor painting.  

I loved his energy, his smile, his passion, his humility and desire to share.  He loved his students.  He saw a painting everywhere he travelled.  He was a gift to artists and the public.  He wanted to share the art of Chinese watercolor painting in its purest form, and see that art continue through his students.  He was world-renowned as a master Chinese Watercolor painter. Calgary was fortunate to have him both as a painter and a teacher.  

Last year during our family reunion, we were greatly honored  to get to visit his studio and have him share his art with several of us.  He was overjoyed with having us all there and in showing us all his art.  Gratefully, his niece's husband, Jim Chin, was there to interpret for us.    He gave me the treasured gift of a book collection of his beautiful calligraphy renderings, which included an English translation of why he paints and his art resume.  

Following this wonderful art tour, he joined us all for dinner at a Chinese buffet in east Calgary.  At dinner, we asked him many questions about our mother, China,  and their growing up years together.  He bragged emphatically about our mother and told us of the amazingly courageous woman she was.  He told us of how she saved families through her gardening abilities.  My mother told him to stop, but he continued to emphatically share more stories with us when she left the table.  He shared insight, stories and his great love and reverence for our mother, which we had no idea of.  

That was such a treasured day for our family to have him share time with all of us.  His loving smile, his generous and gracious manner, and our shared passion for watercolor painting have always made him a favorite person in my life.  I am so grateful to have known him.  

I look forward to the time when I will see him again and not have a language barrier.  There will be much to discuss and paint!

Sad to learn the passing of our beloved teacher. Mr. Tang was a very kind and established Chinese painting artist. He taught with great love and techniques. I enjoyed learning from him and worked  together with his other students at his studio. Thanks for the fond memories. My deepest sympathy to his family.
