Dr. Robert Murray Hicks

It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Murray Hicks announce his passing on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 81 years of age. Bob passed away peacefully at the Agape Hospice with family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Bob was born on June 5, 1941 in Calgary, Alberta at the Holy Cross Hospital. After graduating from Crescent Heights High School, he attended the University of Alberta and completed his Bachelor of Education Degree in Secondary Mathematics. Bob began his career with the Calgary Board of Education in 1962 as a mathematics teacher at Henry Wisewood High School. Obtaining his Master’s Degree a short time later from Oregon State University, Bob took the role as a Psychologist for the Calgary Board of Education. In 1968, he proudly earned his Ph.D. Degree from the University of Oregon.

In his 43 years of service, Bob Hicks has had many diverse and equally rewarding roles in the CBE including responsibilities such as CBE System Psychologist, Coordinator of Special Needs for Elementary, Director of Student Support Services and Specialist in Home Education at Innovative Learning Services. When Bob retired he said, “I have been very proud to have been part of the Calgary Board of Education because it is recognized provincially and nationally for its outstanding programs and commitments to quality education. I have been very proud to be a part of this organization. I have been most fortunate to serve for a district that I believe is the best public school system in North America.”

In 1998 Bob was honoured with the Psychology Service Award from the Canadian Psychological Association for his “long-time service contribution to the profession.” Following his retirement at the end of August 2005, Bob wanted to, “continue to contribute back to society. I have been so fortunate; society has been good to me…I have received so much.”

When asked to reflect upon his service with the CBE Bob notes that he was unable to define “one great highlight.” But as he noted, “I think that as a public education system we’re ultimately engaged in the task of human development. So many experiences that I have over the years to help children with special learning needs and coping with the monumental difficulties that children with special learning needs encounter including emotional, social and cognitive struggles, has been very rewarding to me…if I had the chance, I would do it all again. Public education is a magnificent force for creating ‘good’.” Bob retired as Specialist for Home Education at Innovative Learning Services and found his role to be equally rewarding. In Bob’s long career filled with many accomplishments and diverse experiences, he particularly valued the many great relationships and friendships that were made over the years.

Bob was honoured to serve on the Board of Wood’s Homes and his Church Board. He had a strong Christian faith and enjoyed teaching Sunday School to many youth over the years at his church. Bob was a very humble, generous, kind, helpful, humorous, and thoughtful individual who looked for the best in others.

Upon Bob’s retirement in 2005, he enjoyed spending time with his wife Bernice as they pursued traveling, spending time with family, and watching hockey and football games. Bob also enjoyed antique cars.

Bob is lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Bernice and his two sons, Robert and Donald (Debbie), and his treasured granddaughters, Lauren and Leah. Also left to mourn Bob’s passing is his sister, Jean and her family, along with extended family members and friends. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Archie and Mary Hicks.

Our family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the Emergency Responders, the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the Foothills Medical Centre, and the Agape Hospice for their remarkable care.

A private family interment will be held at a later date.
