Douglas William Brown

Doug was born on February 3, 1935 in Calgary, where he grew up. He graduated from Central High School and attended University of British Columbia and the University of Alberta, in Calgary, for his Bachelor of Education Degree. He then completed his Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Calgary. Doug taught at King Edward High School in Calgary and Sir Winston Churchill High School in Lethbridge. He was an instructor in the Math/Physics department at SAIT for the rest of his career until he retired in 1994 after 36 years of teaching.

Doug married the love of his life, Lois Callaway, in 1958 and together they had 2 children.

Doug believed in charity and kindness for those in need, being skilled and proficient in what you do, working hard, being patient, and being encouraging.

Doug loved the outdoors, especially the mountains and enjoyed camping, hiking, skiing, motorcycle trips, boating on Shuswap Lake, golfing, curling and skating. He also enjoyed traveling and visited Russia, China, Ireland, the US, including Alaska, and went on cruises.

Doug was a long term member of the Masonic Family and was involved in many of its branches. He enjoyed supporting Lois in her membership in the Order of the Eastern Star. One of his passions during retirement was his work as a founding member of the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation Learning Centre for Calgary to assist dyslexic children with their learning needs.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, his son, daughter and granddaughter as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sister and brother.

A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Monday, May 8, 2023 at 10:00 AM.
