Doris was born in Toi San, Canton, China. She arrived in Canada on January 22, 1955. She immigrated to Moosomin, Saskatchewan as a young teenager to join her parents in operating their establishment, and local go-to restaurant, The Royal Café. As a young immigrant, Doris learned English, worked hard in the restaurant, and helped her family establish a life in a new country. Later, she studied hairstyling, and married her childhood friend from China, Ken. After moving to Calgary, she took ownership of a small beauty shop in 1964 for $1300, which for over 40 years, she would operate and flourish as the Triwood Beauty Salon; a humble and proudly successful neighborhood business, where her customers could look forward to having pleasant conversation and familiar up-dos. Doris forged friendships and community ties that stretched many decades. She closed her shop and retired in 2005 to create even more memories with Ken, their children and grandchildren. Doris was married to Ken for many decades, until his passing. Together, they raised their family, stayed close to her parents in Calgary, kept close ties with the Chinese community, and operated their small businesses. Doris led a good life that had wonderful, loving, and positive impacts on so many.
Doris will be greatly missed and cherished by her family: son Nicholas; daughter Julia and grandson Samuel; daughter Miranda, son-in-law Ken, grandson Miles and granddaughter Maddy.
Doris is now in Heaven, in peace, where she can reunite with the loving family that awaits her: husband Ken Lee, mother Sue Soon, father Jim Soon, her brothers, and many long-time friends.
