May 7, 1928- August 30, 2017
Doreen was the only child of Lillian and Joseph (Ted) Graves, born on May 7, 1928 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She has left us at the age of 89 to rejoin her parents after a very brave and determined battle with her health. She always believed everyone had a set day and time on this earth and Wednesday, August 30, 2017 was hers.
Doreen will be deeply missed by her son David Flynn, his wife Laura and their two children Andrea and Nicole; as well as her daughter Theresa Schneider (nee Flynn), grandson Gabriel Schneider and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents Lillian and Joseph, who were her largest supporters in life no matter what adventure she chose to tackle. Doreen lived her life for her family, always wanting only the best for them and giving them guidance if needed. Her love and pride for her family was evident each and every day.
Doreen attended Catholic elementary school in Saskatoon until her father, who worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway, was relocated to Wynyard and various other communities in Saskatchewan to support the rail lines during World War 2. During this transitional period, Doreen was enrolled in a Catholic convent, located in Wynyard. There she remained for 2 years, until her parents were settled back to Saskatoon. Doreen really enjoyed the comradery in the convent and made a few lifelong friends there. She then completed her secondary education as an honour student, accelerated two grades and received straight A’s in all subjects.
Her post-secondary education as an office administrator led to her first job working for the Department of Veteran Affairs, helping returning veterans from the war get support and housing. After this posting was completed Doreen took a position as Human Resources Manager with the Saskatoon Co-op for the majority of her working career and loved her time there, along with all of the responsibility that came with the job. With Co-op reorganizing in the 1980's, she relocated for the last few years before her retirement to the Saskatoon Inn as a Personnel manager.
Doreen remained in Saskatoon until 1992 to take care of her parents, and then relocated to Calgary to be near David and family.
The family wishes to THANK the fantastic nurses and staff on unit 32 and various doctors at the Foothills Hospital who worked with Doreen over the last 5 months for all the care and support you gave our mother.
Mom you will be deeply missed by us but the wonderful memories that have been created over our years together will never be forgotten.
All our love,
Your family
Doreen was laid to rest at a Private Family Service held at Queen's Park Cemetery in Calgary, AB on Friday, September 1, 2017.
