Hello.  I was just thinking of my favourite teachers and decided to look up Mr. Sugiyama.  
He was my home room and shop teacher in grade 7 (1993) for only 7 months as I moved and switched schools part way through the year.  However, I remember him as one of the kindest people I’d ever met.  To this day I think of the way he treated and spoke to everyone.  It was an honour to have met him.  
I am very sorry for your loss.

Old Friend
I remember back in 1953 we were working in the sugar beet fields; Daryl lived just across the irrigation ditch from our field.  He saw me and came running out to ask me if I wanted to watch the Queen's coronation on TV.  Of course I would I declared. To get out of work, to get to watch the Queen's coronation, to get to watch TV even though it was only in black & white; Daryl thought we should paint the TV screen Gold because the trim on the carriage was gold (I don't know
how he knew that)  but he was a year older than me and one year smarter than me so he must be right. Besides, we never had a TV and he did.
Both our families lived on farms fairly close to each other so we used to do things together.  In the winter time we played a lot of pond hockey.  We would spend hours clearing the snow off the ponds just to play for a half hour because that's how much daylight that was left. Daryl even built a couple of hockey nets that we hauled around in our pickup trucks from pond to pond.
I remember Daryl liked to play goalie . I don't know why, he wasn't
very good at it. We had a great time anyways.

Another guy our age had a trap line and would sell the furs. So Daryl and I decided to help our friend out. We would go out to the fields when it got dark and hunt for rabbits, 

Daryl and I went to Japanese school twice a week and once we were instructed to write a pen letter to a student in Japan.  We never did pay much attention in class so we were in trouble in trying to write a letter in Japanese so Daryl got his dad to write this letter.  I read this letter out loud to the audience and was praised for writing such a fine letter.  Several weeks later we received word from a teacher in Japan who graded our work. We were told that the level of the writing of our letter was at the grade three level.

After high school Daryl and I moved to different parts of the country.  However we shared our youth together through good times and tough times.

Daryl was a very special person.  He was a giving person and a true friend.  We have known him for years as he was a very dear friend to my cousin. This is when we got to truly know him.  A person who showed how much he cared and loved his Susan very much.  He also became someone special to us.  May he Rest In Peace.  Love Janet and scott

It is with great sadness I write this message. Daryl was one of the nicest people and I was so happy to have him as a friend.  I have many wonderful memories of our times together. Daryl is truly missed.

Daryl-beloved husband, brother, cousin, friend, and teacher. Over all these years, we shared so many memories, too many to mention, bringing us much happiness and laughter. Some of the highlights were from our travels whether to the Panama Canal or Oahu. There were the Friday dindins whether home-cooked or in a restaurant and dinner conversations sprinkled often with content deemed highly inappropriate (by Glen) but hilarious. Though I never taught with you, based upon our conversations and your long standing relationships with former students and staff, I know the same qualities that made you a treasured friend are the same you brought to the classroom-humour, guidance, patience, support, and thoughtfulness. Susan, we all share in your loss; take comfort in knowing the many lives Daryl impacted with his presence. Much love.

2009 Hawaii- Daryl was the expert travel agent who gave us excellent advice on Hawaii for our first family trip there. Here is a group shot of us meeting up in Honolulu.

Dear Susan and Family,
Like others, I was fortunate to know Daryl when I first met him at A.E. Cross.  Later, Daryl became the dinner organizer for a small group of A.E. Cross teacher alumni and we remained in touch over buffet adventures. He was always a positive influence on any situation and had a vast knowledge to help others with their problems. (From tips on Hawaii Vacations to how to fix an appliance in your home.) I always appreciated his sense of humour and his observations on people and life. He also had this unique layback manner that brought calm to our sometimes chaotic world. Our condolences to you.

Daryl was an amazing guy with joy and laughter in his soul. Always a true gentleman with love for family and friends. I know he is with Glen now looking down upon us with a smile.

So hard to believe but we know that the Dynamic Duo (Daryl and Glen) are back together again.  Our sincerest condolences to you both.  We will always remember his little mischievous laugh and that big grin.   We thank him for being the best friend to our Uncle Glen.  They shared so many great times and were always there for each other through thick and thin.    Thank you for that Daryl.    Our thoughts are with you as you navigate life going forward.  He will always be with you!!

Shiro and I live in Japan. We met Daryl and Susan over 10 years ago through Daryl's friend Glen. Since then we visit Calgary every summer and have dinner with them. It was a highlight of our summer until Covid 19 spread.  We finally got together last year when Daryl and Susan visited Japan. We never thought that would be the last time we would see him. 

My husband Shiro is not a gregarious person. In fact, it is very rare that he has dinner with anyone other than his family. Daryl and Glen are the exception. He enjoyed being their company. What I want to say is because both Daryl and Glen are caring people with warm hearts. They were both naturally kind. When I was sick and unable to work, I stayed with Glen. And Glen, Daryl, and Susan took me here and there every day. That was so much fun. How much I miss them.      

I don't know what to say or write anymore. I’m grieved at the sudden passing of Daryl.

Condolences to Susan and family. 

I worked with Daryl at A.E. Cross Junior High School for 14 years and found him to be a very kind and wonderful person. One day while walking past his Industrial Arts  classroom I noticed that the students were attentive and well behaved. When they came to my class I mentioned this and asked them why they weren’t quite so lovely in my class. One boy  said, “ We behave because he has hammers”! 

I also recall that Daryl went salmon fishing each year. He once brought one of the salmon he caught to our luncheon  when school resumed in the fall. It was the best salmon I have ever tasted, basted with brown sugar and butter, perfectly barbecued.

It was an honour to know Daryl and I believe that anyone who has known him would agree. Love and blessings,

Daryl was a dear friend. A better friend you could never find. He passed so quickly but will remain in our thoughts and in our memory forever. My deepest condolences on the loss of your husband Daryl. I had the honor of working with Daryl for 3 years at AE Cross School from 1996-1999. He was an outstanding teacher and colleague. His manner was always humble and quiet but when he spoke  all listened to his wisdom and words of care. His industrial arts shop was the educational setting where young people learned important life skills in addition to those associated with the craft. 
His was a vocie of reason that always resonated with his colleagues. 
Thank you Daryl for your significant contribution to young people and your colleagues during your career.

“Sugi” was a quiet but passionate teacher who took an interest in his students He was involved in the classroom, field and court to ensure  the students under his care thrived and saw the value in being good people. His legacy lives on in all of the lives he touched.

Ross and I were so sorry to hear about Daryl. He and Ross would often chat outside our garages about tools or whatever project Ross was working on and I know Ross enjoyed their talks very much. We are sending our love and are both here anytime for anything you might need.
