On Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Alberta, Charles Andrew Clements, passed away peacefully at the age of 80 years. He was the beloved husband of Valda (nee Richardson) of fifty-four years, loving father to Adela, Andrew, Angus, and Alexander; cherished Grandfather (affectionately known as Grandpa Canada), to Drew, Melissa, Emily and Ethan. Charles Andrew Clements, better known to all as Andrew Clements, was born on January 28, 1930 to Norman Clements and Annie MacKay of Pictou County, Nova Scotia. With the untimely passing of his mother at his birth, Andrew was raised by his Grandparents, the MacKay’s of Hopewell, Nova Scotia. Andrew predeceases his cousins long regarded as his brothers and sisters, Elmer, Donald, Marnie, Carol MacKay, Margaret Herman, and Nancy lee Glerum. Andrew’s lifelong achievements were amazing. Academically he attended university at the early age of 16 years. He went onto earn several degrees with honourary distinction beginning with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics from Acadia University and then a Bachelor of Engineering – Civil Engineering from Nova Scotia Technical College. However, Andrew’s greatest accomplishment was that of his character and dedication to being a loving husband and father. Andrew dignified all that was good about a man. He led a simple life, took pleasure in working hard, believed in the power of kindness, the influence of example, obligation of duty and the virtue of patience. Andrew was a loving man who always put his family and others first. His love for animals, and boyhood memories of the family farm and Nova Scotia were well known to all. His contribution to society could also be measured by his engineering accomplishments around the world as he went about building dams, subways, highways and bridges throughout Canada and in several other countries such as India and Iran. Andrew was truly loved and respected by all who knew him and he will be missed. A Memorial Service was held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 3:00p.m. Andrew will be interred at a later date in Nova Scotia. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta #200, 119 – 14 Street N.W. Calgary, Alberta T2N 1Z6.
