Carole was born in Calgary but soon moved to Barrhead, Alberta where she was raised. After high school she went to the University of Alberta and obtained her teaching certificate. She moved to Calgary in 1966 with her husband of 56 years, Frederick (Rick) Smith. Carole attended the University of Calgary and completed her Education degree in 1977. Carole was a dedicated and talented elementary school teacher with a passion for teaching art. She worked in many different schools including Andrew Sibbald School, Acadia Elementary and Woodlands School.
Carole was an active volunteer as a founding member of Peace Lutheran Church where she maintained the church library. She was a valued member at the Canyon Meadows Golf Club for many years, and took on the role of Captain and President of the women’s league at the club after she retired from teaching. Carole was an excellent golfer and scored 5 holes-in-one over her many years of golfing.
Outgoing and friendly, Carole had many friends, keeping in touch with childhood and university friends, neighbours, and teaching colleagues. Carole was an excellent Bridge player and played in more than one Bridge group including a group that started in her Lake Bonavista neighbourhood and continued for 40 years. In her later years, Carole spent much of her time with her beloved grandchildren who she was so very proud of.
There are so many people who will truly miss Carole. She is survived by her husband, Rick; daughter, Nicole Taylor-Smith (Lloyd Taylor) and grandchildren, Lucas and Sheridan. She is also survived by her sister, Beverley Rayner and brothers, Norman and Morley Waksel, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held for Carole at Peace Lutheran Church (14640 – 6th Street SW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the Church.
