Kate Ter Haar (Van Oosterhout), age 72 of Cedarville, Michigan, passed away January 17, 2024. Kate leaves behind her husband, Carl; daughter, Elizabeth Schmoeckel (Matt) of Lake Elmo, Minnesota; daughter, Ellen Saxton (Andy) of Harrison, Michigan; and grandchildren Hazel and Beckett Saxton and Oliver Schmoeckel. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Horn (Larry) of Holland, Michigan and family.
Kate was preceded in death by her parents Donald and Mary Jane (Zonnebelt) VanOosterhout.
Kate was born November 22, 1951 in Holland, Michigan and graduated from Grand Valley State University in 1974. In 1977, Kate and Carl settled in Cedarville. In the 46 years since moving to the Les Cheneaux Islands area, Kate has been an important part of the local community and school system - as a coordinator for adult and alternative education, a student advocate, member of the Les Cheneaux Community School school board and on the board of the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District. She coordinated, led, and participated in countless committees and enrichment opportunities within the Les Cheneaux Islands community and beyond.
Kate was a self-described “blue skies seeker, a lifelong learner, educator, reader, gardener, gadget lover and do-gooder.” She fought annual battles with the deer for her gardens, enjoying the process even when the deer won. She loved cooking and being creative with themed book club meals with her book club.
The highlight of her later years was her three grandchildren. Kate had great fun planning their summer visits each year to “Camp Islington” which included scavenger hunts, fishing, golf cart rides, and cherished family time.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Kate, contributions may be made to Les Cheneaux Ambulance Auxiliary. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their guest book online.
