Elizabeth Ann (Evans) Grit

Elizabeth Ann (Evans) Grit, age 82, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, April 11, 2024. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents Donald and Grace Walter; first husband, Roger Evans; in-laws Arthur Evans Jr., Annabelle Evans, Jim Evans, Diana and Everett Fought, Jerry Grit; and infant great-grandson, Abram Evans. She will be remembered by her husband, Donald Grit; children Mike (Julie) Evans, Patti (Eric) Rohloff, Cindi (Matt) Williams, Kendra (Randy) Hunt; grandchildren Patrick (Amanda), Emily, Nicholas (Toria), Blade, Logan (Alexa), Brock, Holden, Tyler, Bailey, Caleb, Addison, Ryan (Morgan), Lauren (Dayton), Payton; six great-grandchildren Taryn, Jayce, Kadyn, Ada, Sterling, and Seth; sister, Kathy Onak; in-laws Shirley, Marve (Millie), Phil, Tom (Elaine), Dallas (Sharon), Vonda (Bob); and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Our mom was known by a variety of names: Elizabeth, Betty, Liz, Mom, Nana, Grandma, and Great-grandma. Regardless of the name, she was always very involved in our lives: coordinating parties and events as a room mom, serving as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and participating as various board positions of the Martin Band Boosters. She was particularly proud of her involvement in fundraising for new band uniforms for the Martin High School Band. One of her favorite activities was accompanying students on piano who were playing in Solo and Ensemble. She accompanied many students throughout the time all of us children were in school and continued even after we had all graduated. She played for close to 30 years.

After becoming a grandma, she enjoyed supporting and cheering on her grandchildren in their various extracurricular activities. Whether, football, basketball, soccer, wrestling, volleyball, swimming, band, or theatre, she was in the stands or auditorium for a lot of it.

While living in Martin, Mom was an active member of the Lions and Lioness Clubs and could often be found baking cookies for the blood drives. She was awarded several accolades for her involvement, including the Ken E. Lautzenheiser Sustaining Membership Award in 1998 for unselfish and dedicated service to humanity and Lioness of the Year in 2003-2004.

After relocating to Byron Center with her current husband Don, Mom played piano occasionally for their church and participated in a Ladies Society Bible study group. Mom and Don loved to take Mystery Tour bus tours and enjoyed five years of winter Florida vacations, spending almost three months their last year. In her final years, she was well taken care of by Don, as well as by loving caregivers from MECA's Angels and Emmanuel Hospice. We are forever grateful for their care and love to the whole family.

Visitation with friends and relatives will take place from 5 - 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315. A celebration of Elizabeth’s life will commence at 11 a.m. on Monday, April, 15, 2024, with visitation one hour prior to the service, at Bethel United Reformed Church, 8360 Cottonwood Drive, Jenison, MI 49428. Pastor Steve Postma will be officiating. A private interment will be at South Martin Township Cemetery.
