Sandra Lee Payne age 78 of Burnet Texas passed away February 10, 2015. “Sandy” was born on January 8, 1937 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin Illinois to Roy and Marjorie Burbank. Sandy attended Abbot Junior HS and Elgin HS where she graduated in 1955. In August of 1955 she married fellow schoolmate George Payne who was surely seduced by Sandy’s cheerleading at Elgin.
Sandy was a young bride, young wife and young parent whose youthful spirit set an early example for her children. Sandy had spunk. Packed in her 110 pound body was a high energy individual who tackled all challenges with enthusiasm. When she wasn't working at Illinois Bell and later Arthur Andersen Sandy could be seen vigorously defending her (sometimes guilty) two boys, acting as a cub scout leader, wearing 60s mod clothing, and smoking a cigarette or two.
Sandy liked people with big personalities and stories to tell. Her children knew that you could bring your zaniest friend to the house and they would always be welcomed by their mom. In her early years you might find a house party with a rock band in the cleared out living room. Sandy and George were good dancers, their kids were envious. Later when her children grew up Sandy’s house was often the site for Halloween, Pre-Prom, Graduation and Anniversary parties.
When macular degeneration took Sandy’s sight twelve years ago she slowed up a bit but still forged ahead. Even though she couldn’t see she was still personal and engaging. She never lost her Midwest roots and could quickly make friends for life. Up to the end Sandy brought a youthful spirit to all who met and knew her.
Sandy is survived by her husband George of Burnet, sister Sharon Kampmeyer and husband Bill of Inverness FL her sons Ben and wife Connie of Caldwell ID and Jay and wife Grace of Austin and six grandchildren.
A memorial service in memory of Sandy will be held at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home 306 E. Polk St. in Burnet, on Sunday afternoon February 22nd at 3:30.
