Karen Sue Johnson, known as Suzy to her Daddy, family and friends was born on April 10, 1942, in Mount Vernon, Illinois to parents, Carroll William (Slim) and Wynema (Kinsolving) Gore. She passed away peacefully at her home with family and caregivers in attendance on Friday July 14, 2023, after a long struggle with dementia and numerous health issues. She was the middle child of three children growing up in Albany, Texas with her older sister Carolyn Ann and younger brother G.E. Gore.
Karen graduated from Albany High School in 1960 and later had three daughters from a previous marriage. She was a very nurturing and loving mother who greatly adored her children with a strong Christian faith. She had a good heart full of kindness and compassion for everyone that she came in contact with making people smile, especially her daughters.
Karen enjoyed baking, making candy and crafts, crocheting, dancing and music, and family time with all. She also loved her furry four legged friends, always forming special bonds with each of her pets.
In October 1979, she married William Joel “Bill” Johnson and in 1987, they moved from Albany to Burnet to build their “forever home” on 29 acres amidst oak trees. This is where they shared many wonderful moments with her girls and their growing families.
While Bill pursued his career as a Burnet County Justice of the Peace and Burnet Municipal Judge, Karen worked as an agent for Reliable Insurance helping many families with sincere compassion. She loved working with her clients, getting to know them and their families and helping them out with their needs. She also worked at the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office and later for the City of Burnet at Delaware Springs Golf Course, cooking and serving meals at the grill, and finally at the City Maintenance yard helping people.
Preceding Karen in death were her parents, husband Bill Johnson and sister Carolyn Ann Knight. Survivors include her three daughters Cynthia Ann Ross and husband Edward Snider of Burnet, Catherine Karenina Knight and husband Dwaine of Albany, and Cheryl Lynn Pounds and husband Chris of Burnet. Also surviving are her six grandchildren Jennifer Lewis (late husband Monte), Jason Ross (wife Chanelle), Jordan Arnold, Jaclyn Nesom (husband James), Justine Arnold, and Jacob Arnold (wife Caitlin) as well as great-grandchildren, Lexus, Grayson, Hunter, Hollyn, Natalia, Jameson and Ellie. Karen also loved and always included Edward’s children Emily and Rebecca and their families. Karen is survived also by her brother G.E. Gore, his wife Shirley of Plano, along with nieces Cathy, Christi, Cheri and nephew Chuck.
In respect and honor of Karen’s wishes, a private family graveside service will be held at Shady Grove cemetery.
Lastly, the family extends their heartfelt thanks to New Century Hospice for their care and attention to Karen this past year. In lieu of usual remembrances, please consider a memorial contribution in Karen’s name to your favorite charity or organization.
