Charles Hugh McLaurin

Charlie was born on September 26th, 1929, in Marshall, Texas to Walter Scott McLaurin and Alma Pitman McLaurin. Charlie’s father died when he was young, and his Uncle Carl and Aunt Gladys helped his mom raise him in east Texas. He moved to Big Spring, Texas where he attended school and met his wife to be, Betty Jo O’Brien. They married on November 5th, 1948, and were married just days shy of 76 years. Charlie worked for Halliburton and Dowell Schlumberger for many years overseas. He, his wife and children went to Libya, the Netherlands, Canary Islands, and Venezuela. They also lived in Hobbs, New Mexico, Alaska, Tulsa, Oklahoma and then to Lafayette, Louisiana, where he retired from Dowell Schlumberger. Charlie and his wife, Jo, traveled to many parts of the world after retirement, including Baja, Mexico, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. They met many interesting people who became friends. Charlie loved to hunt, fish, travel, and play poker with his buddies. Charlie’s motto was “If there is a paved road and a dirt road, take the dirt road so you see more.” He also had a soft heart for stray animals and would donate his time to the Hill County Humane Society in Buchanan Dam, Texas, where he loved, cared for and socialized with the animals awaiting their new homes. The staff was entertained by his laughter from the antics of the kittens.

Charlie was survived for one day by his wife, Betty Jo McLaurin, and then she joined him on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024. He is survived by his daughter Leigh Goding, and her husband, Roger Goding. Also survived by son, Charles Scott McLaurin, and wife, Nancy McLaurin. There are four surviving grandchildren: Nate Goding of Lakeway, Texas, Courtney Grijalva and husband Tony Grijalva of Odessa, Tx, Ryan McLaurin of Conroe, Tx, and Jonathan and wife, Whitney McLaurin of Conroe, Tx. There are nine great grandchildren: Leigha Grijalva, Eryn Grijalva, Ashley Goding, Keigan Wilson, Joseph McLaurin, Jordan McLaurin, Jonah McLaurin, Joy McLaurin, and Josiah McLaurin. He is also survived by his cousin Ann McLaurin of Montrose, Mississippi.

In lieu of flowers, the Family asks for donations be made to the Hill Country Humane Society.

Graveside services to be held later in East, Texas. Additionally, a celebration of Life will be held for friends and family in Burnet, Texas.

Special thanks to the staff of Country Oaks Assisted Living. They went above and beyond to enable our father to live out his days in the best possible way. Thank you so much to the nursing staff at Burnet Seton Ascension Hospital for their diligent and loving care of our Father in the days before he was cared for by Hospice. The staff at Oaks Nursing Center were also kind and caring in his final days. He never met a stranger and always had an infectious grin.
