It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Yoshiyuki Okamura of Lethbridge, Alberta at Surrey Memorial Hospital, British Columbia on 8th of March 2016 at the age of 92.
Loving husband to Elaine Yuriko (dec'd), he is survived by 3 children Jean, Gary (Lisa) and James (Carrie); 3 grandchildren Grace, Sarah and Sophia; brother Tatsuo; in-laws Kiyo, Larry and Margaret, and Jean as well as multiple nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings Masayoshi, Kimiye, Chiyeko and Yukio
Yoshiyuki was born in New Westminster, BC on January 22, 1924. The family operated a chicken farm until being evacuation in 1942. After the war, he was the first Japanese Canadian to graduate from the University of Manitoba medical school in 1949. While studying obstetrics and gynecology in Honolulu, he met and married his loving wife, Elaine in 1959. He was a busy physician in Lethbridge helping many in need as well as raising his family. He was visiting family for Christmas in Vancouver when he fell ill requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, he was visited by many family members throughout his hospital stay and this was greatly appreciated.
