Mrs. Jean Fong Jan Wong

Fong Jan (Jean) Wong (nee Chin) died peacefully the morning of August 29, 2018 in Burnaby Hospital at the age of 87 years. Mom fought a courageous battle the last 20 months, but she finally succumbed to stomach cancer. Jean is survived by her husband Shue Teen (Tony) Wong, her children Stanley (Christine), Gary (Inseon), Nancy (Ming), grandchildren Ryan, Darren, Linnea (Jason), Warren (Elaine), Jason (Cathy), Stephen, Jordan, Lauren and Bryan, and her siblings Carolyn (Victor) and Alan (Georgina), and is predeceased by her parents Chuck Nin and Fong Chor Chin.

Mom was born in Foo Chung village, Shak Kee, Zhongshan county, Guangdong, China on April 10, 1931 and immigrated to Canada at the age of 18. She attended ESL classes at Seymour School, which required her to stay with her Uncle Harry in East Vancouver during the week and to return home every weekend to work on the family vegetable farm on Douglas Road in Burnaby and to help raise her infant sister and brother. After a brief courtship, Mom married Dad on October 24, 1953. Stanley was born in 1954, followed by Gary in 1955 and Nancy in 1957.

Mom worked for over 30 years as a seamstress at Aero Garment. During the early years, Mom worked at her job and simultaneously raised her young family. Mom was so proud of her children’s accomplishments, due mainly to Mom stressing the importance of a good work ethic, higher education and to always pursue your goals.

Mom’s greatest joy was being with her family, especially her nine grandchildren, whom she often spoiled with candies and lucky red lai see envelopes. She loved preparing meals for the entire family and later, when it became too difficult for Mom to do that, she would host big family style meals at one of her favourite Chinese restaurants. Mom’s extended family was able to share one last dinner with Mom beside her hospital bed the evening before her passing. We are sure that Mom is looking down upon us with a big smile, knowing that we were able to fulfill her last request.

A funeral service is scheduled for 9:30 am on Wednesday September 12 at Forest Lawn Chapel at 3789 Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby with a reception to follow. Public visitation is from 8 pm to 9 pm on Tuesday September 11 at Forest Lawn Chapel. The family would like to thank Mom’s family doctor, Dr. Kenneth Chan, her acupuncturist, Dr. Gerard Yan, whose treatments enabled Mom to enjoy valuable extended time with her family, and the doctors and staff at Burnaby Hospital, and especially its Palliative Care Unit, whose care and compassion made Mom’s last two weeks of her life much more comfortable for both Mom and her family.
