James Wen-Chih Hsu, loving husband, father, and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2024 at Vancouver General Hospital, after a long bout with illness. James was born in Taipei, Taiwan on May 15, 1949 the eldest of 5 children. He grew up in an underprivileged household and gave up on attending university in order to make an early entry into the workforce to financially support his family. He came to know the Lord Jesus Christ from a very early age and was baptized in 1963, also bringing his whole family to know Him as their saviour. This began his relationship with one of his two great loves of his life, the other being with his wife Mildred Wei-Ming Chang whom he also met through the church.
James and Mildred married in 1978 and travelled together to Vancouver, Canada to start their family in 1979. Priscilla was born in 1980 and Mark in 1984. James was very active in the church life and helped many newcomers to Canada adjust to their new country, just as others had helped him. He worked hard, primarily in the construction industry, to support his family and also remained connected to his sisters who had remained in Taiwan or immigrated elsewhere. He built (as in physically built) a home for his family in east Vancouver and warmly opened it to many friends, visitors, and newcomers; many nights were filled with singing and laughter under his roof.
Through it all, he was accompanied by his faithful wife who supported him and made the house that he built truly feel like a home. When James was struck down by the illness that slowly took his ability to move, Mildred was there to support him and lovingly care for him for many years until the very end. In his last days, he was visited by many family members, old friends, and acquaintances, some who he had not seen in years or who had travelled from far away. This brought him great comfort and warmed his heart to be able to reminisce and enjoy the fellowship of the body of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, son-in-law Brian, daughter-in-law Angela, and grandsons Logan and Aiden, as well as his sisters Wen-Na, Teresa, Wen-Yuan, and Anita.
An evening visitation for James will be held Friday, April 19, 2024 from 7:45 PM to 8:45 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 3789 Royal Oak Ave, Burnaby, BC V5G3M1.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, with the burial following shortly thereafter.
