Born on February 7, 1949 in Toisan, Canton (Guangdong) and passed away February 20, 2022 in Vancouver.
At age 18, Henry left Hong Kong along with his mother to pursue a life in Canada. He landed in Vancouver, B.C. in 1967 with nothing more than $5 in his pocket. “Hard work” were words that Henry lived by and his future held great things. After graduating high school in 1971 he found his first real job at Safeway, where he would work for the next 32 years until retirement. But those years weren’t all about work. He met his wife, Joan, whom he wed in 1975. They were inseparable and did everything together. To his role as a loving and devoted husband, he was also a dedicated father to his four daughters. He was always there for his children when they needed him. His later years had the added joy of seven grandchildren, to whom he will always be “Gong-Gong”.
To all who knew him, Henry was kind, generous, and positive. He loved meeting new people and making new friends. They were always welcomed and greeted by his warm smile or a friendly wave hello. Most of the time, he could be found in his woodworking shop or garden, which were perfect for a man who loved to learn, grow, and help others. His retirement years were spent enjoying life to its fullest. He and Joan spent their time travelling, playing badminton, and spending time with family and friends.
Henry was taken away suddenly and too soon due to a massive stroke. He will be missed dearly by friends, neighbours, and those who knew him well. But most of all, he will be forever missed by his family. We hope all of you will fondly hold his memory close to your hearts.
Henry leaves behind his wife Joan; daughters Lysanne, Leanne, Lisa, and Lelaine; grandchildren Marion, Elizabeth, Katherine, Daniel, Connor, Parker and Eric; elder sisters Rose and May. For several years, he was a member of the Badminton Vancouver Club 50.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Vancouver General Hospital Foundation in memory of Henry. Thank you for your love and support, and for being a part of his life.
