She was born on September 5, 1935 in Bei Jiao, Canton, China to parents, Chan Siu Keung and Chow Hau Ling. She was the second oldest from a family of eight children. She grew up with her 4 brothers and 3 sisters at the outbreak of the Japanese invasion of China, which was a time of great turmoil and hardship. In 1949, she and her 3 siblings survived the war years and fled to Hong Kong on foot with her parents, but the other 4 siblings remained separated from the family and have been living in Bei Jiao in China ever since.
She married Lee King Wan in 1952 when she was 17. Together they raised Yuk Wah (Grace), Tak Wing (Dan), Tak Wai (Lester), and Tak Keung (Michael) in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Following her spouse’s retirement from the Hong Kong Police, both of them emigrated to Canada in 1992 to be closer to their children and grandchildren in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. Eventually they settled in Richmond, BC. They both enjoyed fishing, and entertaining family and friends at home with Mahjong games and Chi Woon’s amazing home cooking. Since their immigration to Canada, they continued to visiting their relatives in Hong Kong and mainland China, and resumed contacts with her siblings in Bei Jiao, China.
Chi Woon had many ‘self-taught’ talents, which include sewing, knitting, embroidery and particularly cooking. She was devoted to caring for her grandchildren, and at her happiest when the family were around the table enjoying the multi-course dinners she put together.
During the last 15 years, she spent much of her time with her family, keeping in touch with her siblings in Hong Kong and China, travelling to see the grandchildren, dining at her favourite restaurants and fitting in a game of Mah Jong, which she enjoyed playing with friends and family.
She was predeceased by her spouse in 2004, and a few of her siblings from Hong Kong and China within the last twenty years. During the last 5 years, she had been a resident of Royal City Manor, and received excellent care from their nursing staff.
She is survived by her 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren: Grace and Brian, Dan, Lester and Lucia, Michael and Michelle. Grandchildren Cheryl (and Sam), Barry, Philip (and Lisa), Allen, Marco, Derek, Dominic and Great-grandchildren, Olivia and Darius.
