Ray was born December 12, 1931 in Bryan the son of Ray Buchanan Darling Sr. and Annie Mae (Metzer) Darling. He married Helen Marie Forsthoff on April 12, 1953 in Bryan, Texas and were together for 63 years, making their home in the Reliance Community.
Ray was employed with United States Postal Service as a mail carrier for 33 years enjoying all the people he met on his route. Ray’s favorite saying while delivering mail and asking how he was doing, his comment was, “There’s only three things wrong with me. I’m cantankerous, hardheaded and hard to get along with.” Later after retiring, he added the word, “stubborn.” He and Helen retired together and began their life ranching full time which he dearly loved. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, and constantly being on the go to visit family and friends.
Ray was a member of Reliance Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing and devoting his life to the Lord. He was always honored when he was asked to sing solos during church services. Ray served our country in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was aboard a destroyer as a machinist mate. He was honorably discharged soon after the war.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Ray Sr. and Annie Mae Darling; son, James “Buddy” Buchanan Darling and a daughter, Constance “Connie” Hope Darling.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Marie (Forsthoff) Darling; son Charles Ray Darling and wife Rox Ann; sister, Cora Ann (Darling) England of Sparta, Tennessee; grandson, Shawn Darling and wife Leslie, their children, Colton Darling and Angelica Briggs of Bryan; granddaughter, Kayla Jo Darling of Milano; granddaughter, Lisa Kenmuir, great-grandson, Cayden Kirk of Bryan; and grandsons, Steve and Brandon Dix of Cedar City, Utah.
